Q.B. Answer the following questions in 30-40 words: (2X5=10)

a) How did Douglas develop the fear of water?

California beach—3-4 years old —standing in the surf —tossed by a wave—under sea water –
gasping for breath
b) Why was it necessary for Douglas to swim from Triggs Island to Stamp Act Island and then in
Warm Lake?

Even after training for ten months Douglas was not sure that he had conquered the fear of
water. He wanted to put himself to more tests. When Douglas swam from Triggs Island to
Stamp Act Island only once he felt the terror revisiting him. When he swam in Warm Lake
the next day the fear was gone. He swam across to the other shore and back.

c) Why did the fact that Joanne had her mother’s eyes disturb Jack?

Joanne and her mother shared blue eyes. Joanne’s mother Clare had an independent spirit, an ability
to think for herself. Looking at Joanne’s blue eyes Jack was disturbed as he felt that he would not be
able to keep Joanne under his control very long / Jack did not approve of women who could think for
themselves and looking at Joanne’s blue eyes Jack felt that Joanne was soon going to be one.

i) Retaining the skunk smell was important as it was a skunk’s unique property and uniqueness
should not be sacrificed— ii) the smell was repulsive and it would prevent other animals from
harming Roger, and so it was his defence mechanism—iii) Roger’s problem was that his friends
