The document contains 10 short answer questions about linear algebra concepts like linear independence, vector spaces, bases and subspaces. The questions test understanding of determining if sets of polynomials or vectors are linearly independent or dependent, finding bases, and identifying subspaces. Properties of matrices and their rows and columns are also addressed.

Short Answer Questions:
1. Consider { p1 , p2 , p3 , p4 }, where p1 (t ) = 1, p2 (t ) = t , p3 (t ) = 4 − t , p4 (t ) = t 3 . Determine
whether this set of polynomials is linearly independent or linearly dependent. 2. Is the following an example of a vector space? X = R, x ⊕ y = x + y + 1, α ⊗ x = α x + α 3. Does the set of all vectors in R 4 that have exactly two zero entries span R4 ? 4. Consider S = {[1,3, 2,0]T ,[−2,0,6,7]T ,[0,6,10,7]T ,[2,10, −3,1]T }. Find a basis for Span( S ). 5. Is there a 2 × 2 matrix whose powers span R 2×2 ? 6. If A is 3 × 4 matrix, prove that the columns of A are linearly independent. 7. If A is 4 × 3 matrix, prove that the rows of A are linearly independent. 8. In each case, determine whether W is a subspace of R 3 . i. W = {x : x12 = x1 + x2 } ii. W = {x : x1 = 2 x3 } 9. If V = R n and W = {( x1 , x2 ,..., xn ) : x1 = xn }, find a basis and dimension of W . 10. Can you exhibit a basis of Pn consisting of all elements of degree n ? All of degree ≤ n − 1?
