1. Consider { p1 , p2 , p3 , p4 }, where p1 (t ) = 1, p2 (t ) = t , p3 (t ) = 4 − t , p4 (t ) = t 3 . Determine


whether this set of polynomials is linearly independent or linearly
dependent.
2. Is the following an example of a vector space?
X = R, x ⊕ y = x + y + 1, α ⊗ x = α x + α
3. Does the set of all vectors in R 4 that have exactly two zero entries span
R4 ?
4. Consider S = {[1,3, 2,0]T ,[−2,0,6,7]T ,[0,6,10,7]T ,[2,10, −3,1]T }. Find a basis for
Span( S ).
5. Is there a 2 × 2 matrix whose powers span R 2×2 ?
6. If A is 3 × 4 matrix, prove that the columns of A are linearly independent.
7. If A is 4 × 3 matrix, prove that the rows of A are linearly independent.
8. In each case, determine whether W is a subspace of R 3 .
i. W = {x : x12 = x1 + x2 }
ii. W = {x : x1 = 2 x3 }
9. If V = R n and W = {( x1 , x2 ,..., xn ) : x1 = xn }, find a basis and dimension of W .
10. Can you exhibit a basis of Pn consisting of all elements of degree
n ? All of degree ≤ n − 1?
