IA3 - PSMT Methods Flowchart Slide

The document outlines a 4 stage process for designing a slide for an amusement park: 1) Formulate - Design a mathematical model for a slide using functions and considering safety and thrill. 2) Solve - Produce sketches, math models, and use calculus and technology to develop a valid slide design. 3) Evaluate and Verify - Assess the reasonableness of the solution by discussing strengths, limitations, and assumptions. 4) Communicate - Check that the report is in the proper format and communicates all findings clearly using appropriate vocabulary.

Stage 1 – Formulate

In this task, you will design a new slide for Fun World by utilising a range of function types,
including logs, exponential, trigonometric and additional relation types.
You need to research aspects of a slide and design a valid mathematical model that meets
specific criteria for thrill and safety. You will need an awareness of calculus and graphing
software to develop and design your model. Remember to document any necessary
assumptions and their associated effects. Define variables used in the task and any
observations regarding a slide. Ensure you identify all aspects of the problem and outline
how you plan to produce a reasonable solution.

Stage 2 – Solve
You need to produce a reasonable and valid solution to the challenge posed by “Fun
World”. To achieve this you must:

 Produce a hand drawn 2D side view sketch of your proposed slide showing your
function types
 Use algebraic, calculus and graphing techniques to produce a valid maths model
of
your slide
 Use calculus to ensure that your slide is smooth whilst ensuring it meets safety
and
thrill criteria.
 Use technology to show the development and complete model of your slide.

Stage 3 – Evaluate and verify

 Evaluate the reasonableness of your solution. How effective is your slide design
considering your initial assumptions, variables and observations?
 Discuss the strengths and limitations of your solution.
 Ensure you have justified and discussed the decisions you have made
throughout
your report.

Stage 4 – Communicate
Check that your report follows a report format and suitable sub-headings have been
used. You should consider how you have communicated all aspects of your findings,
ensuring that you have used appropriate procedural and technical vocabulary. Your
report needs to be in the form of a single Word document. Ensure that your response is both coherent and concise.
Appendices may be included showing working out or formulas used.
