What are some of the differences between Indian and American politics?
(political differences)

(1) India has countless parties. Ruling party forms the Government of
India. The United States has only two major parties: Democrats and
Republicans. They also have another “Libertarian Party” which is rarely heard
of.

(2) India is a parliamentary democracy. The United States is

a presidential democracy.
(3) It is highly possible in India to find politicians with fake degrees. While
politicians in the US are well-educated.

(4) India still runs on British system (consider our police departments), except
for two differences: India is a democracy and also, that our Constitution is
supreme, not Parliament. Whereas US has a system entirely different from
British system, changing all laws.

(5) In India, each ministry is headed by a Minister, while in the USA, each
department is headed by a Secretary. In US politics, the contribution of civilians
is a lot higher as compared to India. Secretaries in the US form the President’s
cabinet.

(6) In India, the lower house is Lok Sabha in which members serve for 5 years,
while in USA, the lower house is House of Representatives in which members
serve for 2 years.

(7) In India, the upper house is Rajya Sabha and in the USA, the upper house is
the United States Senate. Members in both have a term of 6 years.

(8) In India, although we mention Executive and Legislature to be different

from each other, they really are not different. While in USA, the Executive (15
executive departments) and Legislature (US Congress) function independently
under their heads/secretaries who report to the President of the United States.

(9) In India, there are lesser “aware” voters than in the USA.

(10) We also have a lot more politicians working for their own selfish motives,
while USA has most of politicians working for prosperity in their country.
Corruption levels are more in India, truth be told.

And I have analyzed a few speeches by politicians of both countries. I have

observed that in India, you will find politicians preparing their speeches by
writing it out first, while in the USA, politicians mostly give unscripted
speeches and put less pauses. In short, they appear more confident and
composed while speaking. Well, our PM Narendra Modi is a notable exception,
his speeches are also on-the-spot. He, too, is confident and self-composed.

Compare that to Rahul Gandhi or Arvind Kejriwal. They turn politics into a
joke, literally. And they may even fumble in their speeches, a lot.

Politics in the United States is more mature. Politicians regularly have

debates in which they follow a code of public conduct.

Sadly, politics in India has been reduced to a joke. Debates? Forget them,

politicians need to have knowledge about the condition of present affairs. And
many times, the scene in our Parliament House is also a joke, where everyone
wants to interrupt the other. Why on Earth can't these debates be mature?

Differences Between American And Indian Cultures(cultural differences)

Traditional Indian Clothing

Both the Indian and the American cultures are very proud and rich
heritages that are seemingly poles apart but are similar in some ways. The
two countries constantly observe and gauge each other. They also inadvertently
try to imitate each other and in that process we can spot the differences between
the two unique cultures. Here are few of the pop-out differences, some quirky
ones, and a few funny ones.

The purpose of this article is not to debate if one culture is better than the
other but to give the American guest a better understanding of
the Indian culture. In the last few decades the Indian and the American
cultures have undergone unprecedented changes that have led to westernization
of Indian culture as well as the Americans developing keen interest in practicing
yoga and developing a taste for Indian cuisine.

 There is a lot of importance given to society in the Indian culture. An

individual’s actions have an impact on the society’s perception of that
individual. Attending a school, interacting with people in a particular
manner, wearing a certain outfit, and even the person one chooses to
marry decides the type of individual you are.
The American culture emphasizes on the individual instead of trying to appease
the society. An individual concentrates on his own aims and goals instead of
worrying about the society.
 Family is considered the next important priority. Children are molded
in a particular way from a very early age and the significance of family is
impressed upon them. They are guided on the part they will have to play
when they grow up.

American children are brought up to be independent with unique views

and opinions. Though family values are important, the individual is expected to
take responsibility for his/her decisions.

 Marriages are arranged by families rather than being decided by the

bride and the groom. In rural India, arranged marriages are still the
order of the day. Families decide who their son or daughter should marry
and going against this norm spells trouble. This concept is gradually
being supplanted by marriages of choice in urban India.

Independent young american

Families play no part in selecting a partner for the son or daughter.

 Joint families are still encouraged in rural India, where parents, their son,
his wife and children, grandchildren – all of them live in the same house.
In urban India, the idea of nuclear families is more popular and prevalent.

The concept of joint family does not exist in the USA. Kids are considered old
enough to support themselves when they turn 18. They move out of their
parents’ and start on part time employment even as they attend college.

 Dress code is considered important, especially for women. Clothing

that is deemed appropriate and respectable for women include sari,
Salwar kameez, chudidar, and long skirts. Revealing and tight-fitting
clothes are frowned upon, particularly in rural India. In recent times,
however, this moral policing has been challenged by many women’s
organizations and women in cities and larger towns do not hesitate to
dress as they please.
American woman do not have any restrictions on how they should dress though
the unwritten rule is to dress appropriately as the occasion demands. There are
always formal and informal dress codes to adhere to.

world. India is very well known for its rich cultural heritage which is a
combination of customs, traditions, lifestyle, religion, languages, rituals,
cuisine, etc. depending upon area. Here you can see unity in diversity like
people belonging to different religions live happily.

and a smile on their face. Not only the guests but here people worship
animals, statues, rivers, stones, trees, kids, etc.

Indian Culture is now divided into two categories which are traditional and
the modern one. In traditional culture, people give more importance
to their society. Community comes first according to them, but this scenario
is changing slowly with the impact of westernization.

About 3-4 decades ago, only arranged marriages are common, where the
parents of the bride and groom choose the spouse for their child and then
decides about the marriage but now love marriages are also equally
respected.
There are so many festivals celebrated in the country like Holi, Diwali,
Dusshera, Eid-UL-Fitr, Christmas, Baisakhi, Navratri, Muharram, etc. Here
you can see the variety of clothing depending on the region. The Indian
woman prefers Saree or Salwar Kameez with dupatta whereas Dhoti Kurta,
and Kurta Payjama is the traditional outfit of men in India.

Here, transparent, revealing and tight fit dresses are not likened. Hindi is
the most popular language of the country, but there are 122 major
languages which are spoken in India. In India, there are is a wide variety of
cuisines like northern, southern, eastern, western, etc. which differ in
spices and ways of making them. Indian sculpture, architecture is also
world famous.

About Western Culture

Western Culture is referred as the modern and advanced culture in the

world. The main pillars of the western culture are capitalism,
individualism, rights, ethical values, etc. You can see western culture in
America, Germany, Spain, Europe, etc. Here most people belong to
Christianity and Judaism.

People give more importance to their wants, needs, desires and happiness.
Nobody here has time to think what other people thinks about
them because they are busy in doing their own business.

If we talk about marriages, love marriages and consented marriages are

very popular in western countries. People do not have a strong bond with
their family; they leave home after reaching certain age to become self-
dependent. Youngsters learn and earn at the same time.

Western architecture, paintings, and music are highly admired across the
world. Ballet dance and ballroom dance are the popular dance forms here.
In western countries, people are more concerned about their health, and
that is why they prefer heavy lunch and a light dinner. Their food contains
less oil and spices.

When its about clothing, people like to wear what the desire, there is no
restriction on wearing anything. English, French, American, Spanish, etc.
are the most common languages spoken in the Western countries.

Lifestyle In India Vs USA

 February 22, 2015 Giriraj Srivastava

Comparison of Lifestyle in America and India

Living in USA, could be in many ways different from Indian lifestyle. Be it

relationships, culture, technology or society, both societies have their own ways
and sometime they even contradict each other.

Family, Society & Relationships

The American society is very tolerant and accepting. One can live a weird
lifestyle without fearing isolation from society. People from different
backgrounds are accepted as they are. Talking about relationships and families,
generally families consist of a father, a mother and 1-3 children. Most of the
time, both the parents work and kids spend their time in school or with friends.
After passing their high schools, most of the children shift to live on their own.
They become independent and even their parents are not considered to be
dependent once they grow old.
But, while Americans cherish individuality, Indians live in a completely
different world. The Indian society practices their traditions and culture with
their heart. A typical Indian family consists of many members; father, mother,
grandfather, grandmother, uncles and aunts and their kids, all live together.
However, with the changing time, things have changed a lot. As more and more
people are moving to urban areas, such traditions are fading. Generally, the
elder male member of the family, often referred to as the head of the family,
earns and the female members take care of the household and kids. The kids
grow around them and once they become adults, they take a job or join the
family business and after a few years they marry.
The Indian society might not be as acceptable as the American society but it
definitely knows how to share love.

A Twist Of Technology

The lifestyle is not only different in terms of relationships and society, but they
also differ on technological aspects. Like in India, a middle class person might
not afford a car and after traveling in a bus for half an hour, he will be drenched
in sweat. However owing a car is very common in America, mainly because the
cars are very cheap.  But even if someone travels in a bus, getting tired because
of discomfort is unlikely to happen. All of the buses are air-conditioned and so
are most of the buildings in America. Life in America is comparatively very
comfortable than that in India.

Conclusion

Although the two lifestyles are very different from each other but both have
their goods and bads. And putting one over other would be an injustice. The
matter is of mentality. For a person who wishes to enjoy his or her individuality
and who wants to try different things, America is heaven. But at the same time,
for a person who loves living in a social setting with their own cultural believes
and being surrounded by people of similar mindset, his destination is India.
