 DVB‐RCS is a system that allows users to receive and transmit via a Geostationary
or Inclined Orbit non‐regenerative (a.k.a. bent‐pipe) satellite

TR1VD‐000000‐000‐Rev07 Module BHT‐1: Hub System Overview  5
System Overview

 Hub
• The Hub is primarily responsible for carrying Internet Protocol (IP) traffic between the
external networks and the Satellite Interactive Terminals (SITs)
• It is also responsible for overall network management and SIT management
• The external network is the means by which service providers access SITs and is either
a local area or wide area network depending on the individual service provider

 Open standard for two‐way broadband access over satellite
 Forward link is based on the DVB/MPEG‐2 standard (DVB‐S or DVB‐S2)
• DVB‐S2 support
o More efficient modulation schemes
o Stronger error correction scheme
o Constant Code Modulation (CCM) operation
o Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) operation
 Return link
• MF‐TDMA scheme carrying ATM, ATM2 or MPEG
