System Overview
DVB‐RCS is a system that allows users to receive and transmit via a Geostationary
or Inclined Orbit non‐regenerative (a.k.a. bent‐pipe) satellite

System Overview
Hub
• The Hub is primarily responsible for carrying Internet Protocol (IP) traffic between the
external networks and the Satellite Interactive Terminals (SITs)
• It is also responsible for overall network management and SIT management
• The external network is the means by which service providers access SITs and is either
a local area or wide area network depending on the individual service provider

System Overview
Open standard for two‐way broadband access over satellite
Forward link is based on the DVB/MPEG‐2 standard (DVB‐S or DVB‐S2)
• DVB‐S2 support
o More efficient modulation schemes
o Stronger error correction scheme
o Constant Code Modulation (CCM) operation
o Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) operation
Return link
• MF‐TDMA scheme carrying ATM, ATM2 or MPEG
• Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC), DVB‐S2 or TCC
TR1VD‐000000‐000‐Rev07 Module BHT‐1: Hub System Overview 8
System Overview
System Overview
• The link supporting communication from the Satellite Interactive Terminals (SITs) to
the Hub is called the Return Link (RL)
• The link supporting communication from the Hub to the SITs is called the Forward Link
(FL)
o Using a standard Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) format

System Overview
Satellite(s)
• One or several satellites can be used for the space segment. The satellite(s) may be
operating in Ku band (14/12 GHz) or Ka band (30/18 GHz)
• C band (4/6 GHz) or X‐band (8/12 GHz) are supported as well
• In the case of multiple satellites, they may be in the same or in different orbital slots
TR1VD‐000000‐000‐Rev07 Module BHT‐1: Hub System Overview 10
System Overview
Return Link Sub‐System (RLSS)
• Generates forward link signaling
• Receives return link communications from SITs
• Handles SIT Logon / SIT Synchronization
• Allocates return link capacity
Forward Link Sub‐System (FLSS)
• Sends forward link communications to SITs
• Used by the RLSS to send control information to SITs
TR1VD‐000000‐000‐Rev07 Module BHT‐1: Hub System Overview 11
System Overview
Internet Protocol Sub‐System (IPSS)
• Receives return link traffic from the RLSS
• Routes IP packets towards appropriate destination
• Provides routing for forward and return link multicast
• Provides the infrastructure for the management network
TR1VD‐000000‐000‐Rev07 Module BHT‐1: Hub System Overview 12
System Overview
IPSS Options
• TCP acceleration, also referred as Performance Enhancement Proxy (PEP)
• Traffic shaping capability
• Compression
• Security
o IPsec
o Firewall
• Voice over IP (VoIP)
• Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE)
TR1VD‐000000‐000‐Rev07 Module BHT‐1: Hub System Overview 13
System Overview
Support Equipment
• Timing Sub‐System
o Provides highly stable and reliable timing and frequency reference signals to the
Hub
