COMMUNITY

ENGAGEMENT,
SOLIDARITY, AND
CITIZENSHIP
(MODULE 1-4 ACTIVITIES)
OVERVIEW
Community Engagement, Solidarity, and Citizenship is a multidisciplinary subject which
is drawn from the social science disciplines of sociology, anthropology, political science, social
psychology, social work, and community development. It focuses on the simplified and practical
application of ideas and methods of the abovementioned disciplines to help learners
understand, investigate, and examine challenges of contemporary community life. It aims to
educate learners on the core values and principles of social justice, human rights, gender
equality and equity, empowerment, participatory development, advocacy, and environmental
sustainability as applied to community action.

Module 1 deals with the basic understanding of community by delving into its definition,
elements of arriving at a sense of community, and its composite structures and before
typologies. Module 2 proceeds with the discussion of the factors on how dynamics in the
community change and how power structures and power actors play a role in community
dynamics. Module 3 discusses the heart of the matter by focusing on the meaning of community
engagement, solidarity and citizenship, together with their related concepts, and an overview of
social change. Module 4 deals with how community engagement, solidarity, and citizenship are
realized through community action, including the youth’s role in such action. This module ends
with the nonnegotiable principles that guide in assessing community action through ethical
standards of behavior. Such standards must be observed so that community initiatives could
safeguard the dignity of human beings without sacrificing harmony with creation.
MODULE 1: UNDERSTANDING COMMUNITY
1. Given that the community can be understood and defined in three different ways, what is
common among them? Explain your answer.

Community as profound sharing of spiritual and emotion connection.Why? because as what I


have seen we share different emotions and we have mixed spiritual beliefs but we still manage
to be at peace in our community, we understand and promote better ideas to reach a better
community for the future people.

2. What are the seven important features of shared emotional connection in a community?
Explain each feature.

Contact Hypothesis- they become close when their are lots of opportunities for interaction.
Quality of interaction- When people get close to each other they enjoy their time together
(positive and good relationship).
Closure to events- when interactions are ambiguous and community task are
unresolve,community cohesion will be inhibited.
Shared valent event hypothesis- Lots of people notice the happenings in the community like crisis
or significant victory and it results shared ideas with each other.
investment- the community becomes more important so they find a way to make our community
last longer for the future.
effect of honor and humiliation to community- When you do good to the community you will be
rewarded and a lot of people will idolize your good deeds and the other one is opposite if you do
bad you will suffer the consequences ono your own.
Spiritual Bond- people share different beliefs and understand each others beliefs as well as
respect.
3. What are the different classifications of social groups in a community?

community social structure


community cultural structure
community political structure
community economic structure

4. Why are symbols and language important for human beings in the context of community
cultural structure?

its important because other people are used to using that and for us who lived in the community
we need to be knowledgable on other peoples way of communicating maybe in terms of their
handicap or its part of their culture
5. What are the five types of capital assets in a community? Explain each.

Urban communities- where the place is very large.


rural communities- this is place is where a small group of people with small places are located.
suburban communities- this kind of community is mixed some people live in subdivision and
some people live in a normal place and some people work in the office some people work selling
foods in the streets or park doing a business.
rurban communities- this are often places where marginalized people exist.

6. What dominant type of human association exists in urban, rural, suburban, and rurban
communities, respectively? Explain your answer.

urban areas because cities have the unique capacity to bring together many cultural
strands. Economic problems and power dynamics are intensified in small spatial areas
in which resources are scarce due to dense populations. Further, cities operate as
zones of confluence for economic relationships and other types of diversity as new
ideas, people, and goods are constantly flowing through urban areas. As a result, the
people there have to respond to new influences, often bringing dominant strains of
culture to the fore.
7. How does social space exist in geographical or virtual communities?

It exist because of the help of the internet it brings people together and toher sical media outlet
platforms as a channel of communication,interaction and exchange of ideas.

8. What are the different community sectors and their specific functions?

public- used to denote the government and agencies


private- used to refer businesses that are responsible for producing goods to meet other
peoples wants and promoting economic growth
voluntary- usually reserves for NGO’s
for-benefit-Hybrid merger of characteristics found in private or public sectors.
9. How do the four elements of the Sense of Community come into play in the community you
belong to? Explain each element.

a. Membership members may have a formal leadership role in a community


organization, or friends and neighbors may recognize them
as the person who gets things done.

b. Influence If one person tries to do a very useful and helpful ways to have a
better place to live in a lot of people will be grateful to do the
same its because having a great leaders leads to a great
community.

c. Integration and All of us had needs and wants so a lot of people out there trying
fulfillment of needs to make new stuffs, new ideas for us to consume and help also
the community to be a better place to live in.

d. Shared emotional where people become one and instead of war we gained peace
connection because of how we treat with respect to each other, we build a
better relationship to build a better future to live in.
10. Think of a social space you usually engage into. Why do you spend time and effort in that
social space?
Online class and other websites to make myself feel at peace, first is I soend more time with my
online class because I am a student and a student should do what the teacher told us and we
need to acquire more learnings for us to reach our goal, second is surfing inn the internet and
whatso ever you called, I take time to rest myself because I also need time to myself instead of
pressuring myself cause its not good, whats good is you need to balance your time thats all to
achieve a good life and a good mind.
MODULE 2: COMMUNITY DYNAMICS
1. Examine the community where you belong to. What type of community power structure does
it have? Justify your answer.

Community population composition has all the characteristic of the


population such as education level,sex compositions and etc. For me
thats what I saw in our community today yes people change time by
time because of what they saw to other people that whats eagers them
to do the same cause they think its normal and you will be part of the
society community where your in, you think that if we dont be like them
we wont be part of this world.

2. Why do positive changes in mortality rates affect the lowering of fertility rates?

Some of the social factors that can influence fertility


rates are: race, level of education, religion, use of
contraceptive methods, abortion, impact of
immigrantion, children as a source of labor (on family
farms), children as support for couples at older ages,
costs of raising children, female labor force
3. What are the different forms of internal and external migration? Provide your own examples
for each.

Internal migration is when some people move to a certainplace but it


didnt go across the country only in their nation. Example I was born
from Cagayan De Oro but we moved to Cebu city for a better school.
External Migration is when you you move in to another country
example Im from philippinnes,I married a turkish so I got a visa on
turkey to live there forever.

4. What do you think is the best way to sustainably manage the country’s population? Justify
your answer.

The proper way is we need to be more responsible with ourselves we


need to be self known on what is happening with our family, We need
to have a proper family planning, planning for our family helps us
sustain a better community, having our life planned will go have a
happy life forever.
5. What is the essential difference between pluralist and elitist communities?

6. What is the essential difference between factional and amorphous communities?

Fractional community is more on power, where politics is present, politics


are getting worse because theyre dominant having the power by themselves
and more political figthings atr happening in this community. Second
community is it more on people who is called “sleeping giants” theyre lack
of innitiative to change our community to have better place to live in.
MODULE 3: COMMUNITY ACTION
1. What is the basic difference between community action and community engagement?

Community actions is when the group of people who has a power to run
a certain things is doing something, pulling a great stance to change the
community to a better place. Community engagement is when you are
trying to help and doing it the right things little by little to have a good
community to live in.

2. Why do you think students like you need to be involved in service learning, community
outreach, or community-engaged research activities? What do you think will be its advantages
and disadvantages?

We need to be involve so that we can be aware of what our community


that is happening and the different ways of how community works in
our times today, The advantage is we can be aware and knowledgable
in any circumstances that is happening our community while the
disadvantage is not all students can team up with that kind things
because they maybe be dependent to someone or do not care at all.
3. What does solidarity entail?

We need to unite with other, become one and gain


more power and change our community to a better
one for the future to have a safe and peaceful place
to live in.

4. What does economic justice mean?

which is to create an opportunity for each


person to create a sufficient material
foundation upon which to have a dignified,
productive, and creative life beyond
economics.”

5. What does climate and environmental justice mean?

a form of environmental justice, climate justice is the


fair treatment of all people and the freedom from
discrimination in the creation of policies and projects
that address climate change as well as the systems
that create climate change and perpetuate
discrimination
6. Think of your status as a student. Are you enjoying education as a privilege or a right? Why?

For me its a previledge because not all children has a family that can
afford to enroll you to a school.

7. What are the core values in the Preamble of the 1987 Philippine Constitution? Explain each.

Family centeredness- focus on our family because no one is there except in our family
Politeness- do good to others for you to receive a greater things from tohers
Hospitality - taking good care of people and being selfless
Gratitude- being thankful in what we have today and readiness to show appreciation
and to return kindness
Shame
Flexibility- willingness to change and compramise
Loyalty- Obey something or someone
Hardwork- exerting more time and effort to have a better future
Resignation- time to rest from a very long year and always be thankful on what you
learned from the past years youve been working.
8. What is the common purpose of CAT and NSTP?

The purpose is to be prepared in anything that will happen sooner or be


independent when it comes to wars for us to learn how to protect and live
by our own selves in the near future.

9. Why does modernization often result to secularization?

As a result of secularization the role of religion in modern


societies becomes restricted. In secularized societies
faith lacks cultural authority, and religious organizations
have little social power.

10. Using the cyclical theory of social change, what stage do you think is the Philippines right
now? Why?

I think the Philippines is in the conflict theory bacause Conflict theory sees social life as a
competition, and focuses on the distribution of resources, power, and inequality.
MODULE 4: PURPOSE OF AND ASSESSING COMMUNITY ACTION
1. What social issue mentioned in this module most greatly affects you? Why?

For me is the Health because we tend to think more on passing our task in
school without thinking how it affects our body I mean we skip our meals,
sleep late just to finish what is given to us and with too much task we tend to
think t much that we cant do it and scared to get downgraded by everyone.

2. What efforts did the Philippine government do to improve the educational system in the
country? What needs more to be addressed?

I think the Philippines will lessen the learning system because it is very
difficult to others to catch up with the learning system. Its just too much and it
should be balance, they should learn the “balance” but somehow they wont
make our country feel the fairness of the game.
3. What problems do the health workforce face in the country today?

Other workers are having diffivulties in working today


because of the pandemic

4. Why is it important for the youth to be involved in community action?

For us to be aware and knowledgable how our


community works we need to be fair at all time and be
honest if you cant do that as a student then you cant
do it in the future.
5. What levels of youth participation are considered transformational? Why?

Any transformation is possible when


emotional and intellectual insight happens.
Because emotional level of thought is not
too difficult in youth with close bonding
with similarity in lifestyle, sharing of
emotions, eliciting of compassion and
attraction of age related issues.Youth is a
stage when tremendous individuality, belief
system, ideality are developed. With the
right perceptions , strong transformations
are possible.

6. What does it mean by the process of attaining development is as important as its outcomes?

It means you need to master some of the things that


enjoys yourself and be recognize as yourself to have a
successful journey in our life.
