PANDEMIC: COVID-19 in the PHILIPPINES

II. Information about COVID-19

In December 2019, China notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of several cases of human
respiratory illness. The new disease lately named COVID-19. The virus causing this disease is known as
severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

The disease easily spreads through small droplets from the nose or mouth. On passing COVID-19, coughs
or exhales, therefore, standing close to someone whose infected are completely at risk.

This virus stays in hands and can be transmitted to someone by physical contact, such as handshake. If
afterwards can touch your eyes, nose or mouth, virus will enter your body and starts the cycle.

The virus is known to survive on different types of surfaces, so touching with contaminated surfaces will
bring you at high risk of infection.

III. Current situation of our country regarding COVID-19

Months had passed after the new virus was discovered, Philippines declared its first positive case
resulting to travel bans from international flights and later on lockdown in the country has implemented to
stop or limit the virus from spreading.

As of July 06, 2020, the Department of Health recorded 46,333 confirmed cases; 1,303 had died; 12,185
of them had recovered while others are stilll suffering. As an action of the government, some places are
still in community quarantine.

As of now, most places are placed under General Community Quarantine (QCG) and Modified General
Community Quarantine (MGCQ) with strict local action and others are at low risks MGCQ. On the other
hand, Cebu City was still at Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECG) because of high COVID-19
positive rate.

As days passed, many samples are collected and tested. This figure showed the low positivity rate
compared to the samples tested for the past months, despite of continuous numbers of positive COVID-19
cases.
IV. COVID-19: Precautionary measures about its cases and symptoms

As of June 03, 2020, the department of health recorded that there were 94.8% mild cases of CPVID-19 in
the Philippines. If you are having a mild disease, you will likely to experience fever and severe cough.

In a lot of cases, the disease tends to run a score within a 3-week period. From an incubation period that
tends to last for 5 days to 2 weeks, and symptoms that present for around 5 to 7 days before the suffer
begins to recover. If you found yourself from this position, immediately contact and inform your doctor.
Remain isolated, maintain good hygiene, eat and stay hydrated and treat issues like pain symptomatically
with safe over the counter medication.

According to the data presented by DOH as of June 03, 2020, it appears that there were 0.5% of severe
cases in the Philippines. These patients are likely to be older than 50 and suffer from health conditions
like severe respiratory issues, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and cardiac illness.

Young people and people without underlying health issues can also experience severe symptoms, so don’t
use your age in health as an excuse to throw caution to the weak. Initially, people who experience more
severe cases of COVID-19 will undergo some symptoms like high fever, coughing, shortness of breath,
chest pains, breathing difficulties, headaches and indigestive issues.

At some point, there are people who are asymptomatic. These people don’t show any symptoms of the
disease and it will put them in a greater risk of infecting others through lack of caution.

V. Fight against COVID-19 as one

It may feel scary that we have no control over the situation, but the fact is, we have a lot of control over
the extremely important factor here. Our own actions, to do our part involve helping yourself and society
combat this illness.

Maintain good hygiene and social distancing, don’t buy into or spread misinformation about the disease,
follow government guidelines and avoid panic buying.

We as a society can get through COVID-19, but only if were all sensible and responsible with our actions.
