This document is designed to introduce the upgraded version ultrasonic fuel sensor --- UFS300
and offer users instructions on how to install the fuel sensor correctly.
UFS300 is a vehicle fuel monitoring device which is designed for the fuel management needs of
company fleet. This product is suitable for diesel fuel tank. This sensor can be used to prevent
fuel theft, optimize the operating costs, improve the driver’s driving behavior and assist with fuel
statistics in fleet management decision making, etc. The sensor is equipped with a high precision
ultrasonic probe, which can detect the fuel level in the fuel tank. Fuel data will be sent to the
server via GPS tracker, and then used to generate fuel report.

Note 1: The tank wall should be solid. The thicker the tank wall is, the weaker the ultrasonic
signal becomes as it passes through the tank wall, which results in a smaller measuring range.
Most fuel tanks are within the measurable range of the ultrasonic fuel sensors, and for those
n
beyond the measurable range of the ultrasonic fuel sensors, actual measurement shall prevail.
Note 2: The blind zone and measuring range of the ultrasonic liquid level sensors vary depending
o
on materials of vessels, vessel wall thickness and the medium whose level is to be measured, so
please take into account these factors in actual applications.

2.4. Advantages Over Other Fuel Sensors
c ia
2.4.1. Capacitive Fuel Sensor
e t
This type of fuel sensor is susceptible to sticky grease stains and causes measurement error. It
u
has potential risk of producing electrical spark. Drilling installation causes pollution and warranty
n
issue.
Q fide
2.4.2. Resistive Fuel Sensor
This type of fuel sensor uses mechanical method to measure fuel level. It can easily get big
measurement error and delay. It is vulnerable to corrosion and pollution because of long-term
exposure to the fuel, which will lower the measurement accuracy. Drilling installation is used.
n
2.4.3. Fuel Flow Meter
o
This type of fuel sensor is difficult to install as the original fuel pipe has to be truncated. It can
measure the fuel consumption, but not the amount of refueling, which makes it inconvenient for
C
measurement and management.

UFS300 User Guide
2.5. Applications
The product applies to various types of vehicles including logistics vehicles, taxis, buses and
passenger cars. It can measure the vehicle refueling and fuel consumption and thus prevent fuel
theft, avoid resource waste, improve operating efficiency, enhance the traffic safety, and
strengthen the operation and management of fleets.

3. Principle Analysis
This chapter mainly illustrates the principle of the ultrasonic fuel sensor and the common fuel
sending units and partitions.

l l
Figure 1: Principle Diagram
3.1. Principle
e c t ia
u n
Liquid level in a container is measured by coupling the transducer to the bottom of the container
using couplant. The transducer generates a short ultrasonic sound pulse which is transmitted
Q fide
through the container wall and into the liquid. The pulse travels up through the liquid until it
reaches the surface where it is reflected and returns back through the liquid to be received by
the transducer. The liquid level then could be calculated by the round-trip transit time and the
sound velocity in the liquid.
According to the principle, the depth of the liquid calculated in this method could be wrong if the
n
ultrasonic wave is reflected before the due time when there are obstacles in the transmission
path. Therefore, users should avoid obstacles that could hinder the transmission of ultrasonic
o
wave such as common fuel sending units, supply tubes, return tubes and partitions inside the
fuel tank.

obstacles.
The middle part at the bottom of the tank should be selected to ensure that the data is
stable, as shown in the Figure on the left. Do not select the area beyond the yellow part for
C
installation which will lead to data instability.
Clean up the dirt and oil stain in the probe installation area, and keep the area dry.
As the coupling agent will be frozen at 0℃, the probe cannot be installed when the
temperature is below 0℃.
Connect the probe to LED display, then power on the display by 12VDC Power Supplier.

Explanation:
i n
After showing a string of data, the display will switch between two pieces of data every 1
l
second.
c a l
"000.0": Fuel level; "0 0": The two numerals indicate
i
Number of signal echoes and status code respectively.
u e n t
F 4: It indicates that the tilt angle of the probe is 4 degrees. Since the probe
cannot be installed when tilt angle is ≥4°, users must adjust the probe angle to cancel the
alarm.
Q fide
When the display is powered but not connected to the probe, the display will
show "9 9". In this case, please connect the probe before continuing with the operation.
Apply the couplant to the center of the probe, stick the probe to the bottom of the tank,
n
and then check the data on the screen.
(Due to high sensitivity of the ultrasonic equipment, please maintain the stability of the
o
probe as a slight shaking will lead to instability of the data)
At this moment, if there is an angle warning, users need to park the vehicle on level ground.
C
"018.9": The detected level is 18.9 cm. It should be close to the actual height. If
the gap between the detected height and the actual height is large, it is possible that the
probe has detected an obstacle (such as a baffle plate) or the echo signal is not good. In this
circumstance, move the probe slowly to find a highly accurate and stable position.

When installing the probe, users can slowly move the probe before holding it still for 2
seconds until the right position is found. If the right location cannot be found in the end,
please contact the after-sales technical support.
i n k
cl ia l
e t
Use sandpaper to polish the surface of the probe and the bottom of the tank, so that a
u n
rough surface is generated for the glue to bond firmly.
Use screwdriver to push the glue to the center of the probe, stir well, and apply the colloid
Q fide
to the center of the probe. Please see the following images:
1) Stir as soon as possible. It is recommended to stir well within 20 seconds when
environmental temperature is around 25℃
2) When environmental temperature is ≥ 30℃, users must stir faster.
3) If the temperature is ≤ 10℃, turn on the heating in the cab to heat the probe and glue.
n
Stir while heating, and extend the mixing time.
Co
Stick the probe on the marked location and ensure that the echo number and status code
on the display are correct.
Hold the probe for 5–15 minutes until the glue is solidified. During the probe installation,
the echo number and status code should be always correct.
If the environment temperature is 25℃, and the status code is still incorrect after 30
seconds, remove the probe and erase all AB glue (This is because it indicates the AB glue
effect is not good if the probe is not fixed then).
4.5.6. Wiring

e t i
There should be at least 20cm distance from the extension wire to the heating and movable
parts.
u n
The extension wires should be fastened every 50cm with cable ties, with the unwanted
parts trimmed with the diagonal cutting pliers.
Q fide
The extension wire should not be tripped over by any movable part.
After the probe is stuck, wait 30 minutes and check whether the status code is correct.
Remove the display, connect the probe to the extension cable, and tie these cables properly
by insulating tape.

AT+GTFSC is used to configure fuel level calibration scale. For detailed information of the
parameters for AT+GTFSC, please refer to @Track Air Interface Protocol.doc. Users need to
enable Bit 3 and Bit 4 of <ERI Mask> in AT+GTFRI when using the function of AT+GTFSC.
First, users should configure the value of Max Tank Volume (unit: liter). For example, the Max
Tank Volume of the tank is 77 liters. Then, set Num of Node to 11. Node N Value represents the
fuel height detected by UFS300, and Node N Percentage stands for the fuel percentage
corresponding to the fuel height detected by USF300. For example, if the fuel height detected by
UFS300 is 0, then the corresponding fuel percentage is 0%. If the fuel height detected by UFS300
is 227.3mm, then the corresponding fuel percentage is 100%. The correspondence between fuel
height detected by UFS300 and fuel percentage should be configured according to the
characteristics of the fuel tank.
