Introduction

 Windows XP is a line of proprietary operating systems developed by Microsoft for use on


general-purpose computer systems, including home and business desktops, notebook
computers, and media centers.

 It was released on October 25, 2001

 The letters "XP" stand for eXPerience.

Terms to Remember:

 Desktop – on-screen work area

 Icons – allows us to open corresponding program

 Task Bar – bottom of the screen

– it contains the Start button, shortcuts, running programs, and


notification area

 Start Button – where we can access the breadth of options that Windows XP offers.

 Control Panel – allows us to configure and customize appearance of the computer

 Help and Support – is used if we have questions

 Search – helps us in finding files

 Run – allows us to directly execute certain commands

 Log Off & Turn Off – aids in closing a current session and it allows us to restart or turn off
computer

 Shortcut Area – contains icons that are used to access a particular program quickly.

 Notification Area – contains icons that represent the program that start up automatically when
the computer is turned on as well as other information.

 Icons and Shortcuts – are small images situated on the desktop of Windows XP

The Windows XP Explorer

 Explorer – is a tool where we can organize and control the files and folders of different storage
systems at our disposal such as the hard drive, disk drive, etc.

 Windows Explorer/ File Manager – is used to delete, see, copy, or move files and folders.

Starting the Explorer

 Start All Programs Accessories Windows Explorer

 Directory Tree – left side, which is the list of units and folders

 Folders and Files – right side, will show the content of the folder that we opened on the left
section.

 Title Bar – name of the folder we are in.

 Menu Bar – contains the menus that will allow us to access to all the operations that can be
done with a file/folder.

 Standard Bar – contains the buttons for the most used operations.

 Address Bar – shows the name of the folder we are working with.

 Status Bar – shows additional information like the total size of the elements we have selected

The Window’s Explorer Views

 Tiles – files & folders are shown with large images with the name, file type and size in KB

 Icons – are represented with an icon smaller than a tile; only name of the file is shown

 List – shows small icons, one below the other, so it’s easier to search by name
 Details – icons are shown one below the other, with some of their properties (size, file type,
date of modification, etc.)

 Thumbnails – a small representation of the content will appear with the format of the image,
such ass jpg., jpeg., bmp., gif., etc.

 Filmstrip – this view is only available for images. On the bottom part a strip will appear with the
images in thumbnail format and on the top we will see a larger representation of the image
selected below.

Files and Folders Properties

 Both files and folders have their own like the size, location, date of creation, attributes, etc

 How to know the characteristics of a particular file of folder? through Properties.

 A window with several tabs will appear:

 General tab – contains information on: Type, Location, Size, Contains, Created, Modified and
Last Access, Attributes (Read-only & Hidden)

 Sharing tab – contains information on the permission that is given to the other users or network
on files and folders

 Customize tab – allows changing the properties of the file or folder

Searching

 It is used when we cannot find a file or a folder

 We can choose among the following options:

o Images, Music, Video


o Documents (word, processing, spreadsheet, etc.)
o Files and Folders
o Hardware (computer or people)
o Search the Internet
o Other options

 Searching for the Internet

The Recycle Bin

 Is nothing more than a space on the hard disk reserved to store information that is deleted so
that in the event of deleting a file or a folder by mistake it is possible to retrieve it.

 It restores files or folders to the place from where they were deleted.

 The Recycle Bin window is similar to WE window, and they have similar options in common,
such as customizing the window, the view, etc.
Configuring the Screen

 It is important because sometimes we spend many hours in front of the screen, so we


recommend spending a few minutes configuring our desktop so that it can be the most
comfortable as possible. Click the right mouse button and select the option Properties.

 Through Properties you can easily change the following:

o Background/Wallpaper
o Screensaver
o Screen Appearance
o Theme
o Resolution and Colors

Configuring the Mouse

 The mouse is a tool that is used constantly and is recommendable to have to it set up to our
needs as well as possible.

 Start Control Panel Printers and other Hardware Mouse

 Buttons tab – you can adjust the set up to suit your needs. (Primary and Secondary Buttons,
Double Click Speed, and Turn On ClickLock)

 Pointers tab – we can choose the type of pointer the mouse is to have when it moves, when it is
busy, etc. (Scheme, Customize)

 Pointer Options tab – we can change the speed of the pointer. (Motion, Snap To, Visibility)

 Wheel tab – is used for a mouse that has a small wheel in between the two buttons and is used
to up and down a page (Scrolling)

 Hardware tab – we can see here the information related to the hardware configuration of the
mouse. (Devices, Device Properties, Troubleshoot, Properties)

The How To’s

 How To Add or Remove Programs –

Windows Register – is a file where the current configuration of the system is saved, the
hardware, software, and the different user configurations

1. Adding programs from a CD-ROM or floppy

2. Adding programs from Microsoft


 How To Modify or Remove Programs

 How To Use Automatic Update –

NAH! This is automatic. Basically this system consists in alerting the user if there are
available updates each time the computer is turned on.

 How To Add Windows XP Components –

We can modify components either because we don’t need them (delete) or we want to
install a new component.
