THE  JOHN  SANDERS  MEMORIAL  COMPETITION  FOR
YOUNG  COMPOSERS
2016

Judges
Dr.  Christopher  Robinson,  Bob  Chilcott,  Adrian  Partington,
and  Tim  Rogers  (Encore  Publications)

Rules of the competition

1. Young  composers  are  invited  to  submit  an  accompanied  (organ)  or  unaccompanied  choral  composition
of  up  to  6  minutes  in  length.
2. The  composition  should  have  been  specifically  created  for  the  2016  Sanders  Society  competition.  Any
previously-‐composed  composition  is  liable  to  disqualification.
3. The  competition  is  open  to  composers  under  the  age  of  30  years  on  11th  March  2016
4. Each  composer  may  submit  only  one  entry.
5. Scoring:    SATB  choir;  maximum  division  is  two  per  part  (SSAATTBB,  or  double  choir)
6. The  text  of  the  composition  may  either  be  taken  from  the  Book  of  Psalms  or  a  public  domain  source.  It
must  be  out  of  copyright  (or  written  by  the  composer)  and  suitable  for  inclusion  in  a  Christian  act  of
worship.  The  final  decision  of  suitability  rests  with  the  judging  panel.
7. The  judges  will  be  looking  for  entries  which  might  find  a  regular  place  in  the  repertoire  of  cathedral  -‐
type  choirs,  which  would  be  rewarding  and  stimulating  both  for  singers  and  listeners  and  which  would
fit  well  into  a  liturgical  context.    Entrants  will  want  to  explore  the  special  sound,  vocal  range  and
technical  accomplishment  of  such  choirs  but  should  also  be  aware  of  some  constraints.  Choirs  vary  in
size  and  composition  and  all  operate  within  a  limited  rehearsal  schedule.  A  practical  approach  is
therefore  advisable.
8. Compositions  must  not  bear  the  name  of  the  composer.
9. Entrants  must  complete  SECTION  A  of  the  application  form  which  will  not  be  seen  by  the  judges,  as  well
SECTION  B.
10. All  entries  must  be  computer-‐processed  (Sibelius,  Finale,  etc)  or  handwritten  in  black  ink  to  the  highest
standard.
11. If  unaccompanied,  all  scores  must  include  a  piano  reduction  at  the  foot  of  each  system  .
12. All  entrants  must  provide  a  short  commentary  suitable  for  use  as  a  programme  note.  (max  200  words)
13. Composition  scores  should  be  anonymous,  bearing  only  a  unique  5-‐figure  identifying  number  on  the
top  right-‐hand  corner  of  each  page;  the  application  form  bearing  the  entrant’s  name  and  contact  details

should  be  sealed  inside  an  envelope  which  has  the  same  identifying  symbol/number  clearly  printed  on
the  front.  The  envelope  must  accompany  the  entry.
14. Scores  are  sent  at  the  entrant’s  own  risk.    The  Society  cannot  acknowledge  receipt  of  the  scores,  nor
return  any  material  submitted.
15. If  the  entries  are  not  considered  to  be  of  sufficiently  high  standard,  the  judges  reserve  the  right  not  to
make  an  award
16. Composers  will  retain  all  copyright  to  their  works,  except  in  the  case  of  the  winner,  to  whom  a
publishing  contract  with  Encore  Publications  may  be  offered.    Subject  to  negotiation,  the  winner  will
assign  the  copyright  in  his/her  entry  to  Encore  Publications  on  completion  of  the  publishing
contract.    The  publishing  contract  with  the  winner  will  be  in  line  with  industry  standards  in  respect  of
royalty  rates  and  other  arrangements.    In  the  event  that  a  publishing  contract  cannot  be  agreed
between  Encore  Publications  and  the  winner,  or  no  entries  are  deemed  suitably  creditworthy  for
publication,  then  the  judges  and  Encore  Publications  reserve  the  right  not  to  publish  any  of  the  entries.
17. The  winner  will  be  required  to  designate  the  composition  as  the  “Winner  of  the  John  Sanders  Memorial
Prize  for  Choral  Composition  2016”
18. It  is  planned  that  the  winning  piece  will  be  performed  on  the  28th  July  2016  by  the  St.  Cecilia  Singers  of
Gloucester  at  Choral  Evensong  during  the  Three  Choirs  Festival  in  Gloucester..    Presentation  of  the  prize
will  be  made  to  the  winning  composer  at  the  Sanders  Society  Lunch  that  same  day.
19. Judging  will  take  place  in  April  2016
20. The  decision  of  the  judges  is  final  and  no  correspondence  will  be  entered  into  concerning  entries.
21. Entries  not  conforming  with  the  above  will  be  rejected  automatically.
22. Submitting  an  entry  for  the  competition  indicates  unqualified  acceptance  of  these  terms
