V SEMESTER B.

TECH (ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING)

MIDTERM EXAMINATION, OCTOBER 2020
SUBJECT: ANALOG AND DIGUTAL COMMUNICATION (ECE3151)
REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM
Time: 90+15 Minutes MAX. MARKS: 20

Note: Answer ALL the questions.

1. Consider an encoder emitting equiprobable symbols at 106 bits per second resulting in a PCM 04
wave that uses polar NRZ signaling with symbols 1 and 0 represented by 0.5V and -0.5V
respectively. This PCM wave transmitted over a noisy baseband channel.
(a) Evaluate the error performance of this PCM system due to AWGN with zero mean and
power spectral density, 𝑁0 /2.
(b) Determine the noise power that does not let the average error rate exceed 1 bit in 106 bits
2. 𝐹𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐹𝑀 𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛𝑎𝑙, 𝑆(𝑡) = 10 sin[5.7 𝑥 108 𝑡 + 5 sin[ 12 𝑥 103 𝑡]. 04
calculate
a) Carrier frequency
b) Modulating frequency
c) Modulation index
d) Frequency deviation
e) Power dissipation in 100Ω resistor.
3. The absolute amplitude of Polar NRZ format of a binary wave is 0.5V and bit-rate 10 bits/second. 03
If this binary wave is to modulate the carrier cos(2𝜋𝑓𝑐 𝑡) to generate coherent Quadri-phase shift
keying(QPSK) signal, write down the expression for this modulated wave and also draw the signal
constellation for the same with signal points shown properly.
4. A Coherent FSK system transmits binary data with signal energy per bit equal to 03
0.72  10 18 Joules . Assuming channel noise is AWGN with zero mean and power spectral density
of 2  10 20 watts / Hz. Determine the average probability of error.

applied to the matched filter matched to this signal. Determine the amplitude of the output of this
matched filter which is required for processing further in digital communication.
6. Consider a random binary sequence where bits are independent and equiprobable. Determine the 02
power spectral density for RZ polar format (show steps properly).
7. Determine the transmitted phase for the binary sequence 1010011100 applied to the logic network 02
of the DPSK transmitter. Assume initial transmitted carrier phase is 0.
