Mass (G) Time of Oscillation (Minutes) : Exercise: Linear Motion & Inertia

This document contains an exercise on linear motion and inertia. It includes 4 questions with multiple parts each. Question 1 deals with the motion of a falling ball. Question 2 compares the free fall of a coin and feather in air and vacuum. Question 3 examines the relationship between mass and time of oscillation using an inertial balance. Question 4 asks about increasing inertia and safety features to prevent passenger injury during accidents.

EXERCISE : LINEAR MOTION & INERTIA

1. A ball is dropped onto a concrete floor. The diagram shows the movement that was captured using a
camera with stroboscopic flash.
(a) Based on your observation on the diagram, sketch a graph to show
velocity of the ball with time. In your graph, label the position of A,
B and C.

(b) By referring to your graph in (a), describe the movement from point A to B.

2. Figure below shows a coin and a feather falling simultaneously inside two transparent cylinder tubes, R
and S. cylinder tube R contains air whereas cylinder tube S is a vacuum.

(a) What is meant by free fall?

(b) Compare the time taken for the coin and the feather to fall
inside cylinder tube R and S. Explain your answer.

3. A student carried out an experiment to study the relationship between mass and inertia using inertial
balance. The result of the experiment are shown in the table below.

Mass (g) Time of (a) Based on the table, draw a graph of time of oscillations against
oscillation mass.
(minutes) (b) What is the relationship between mass and time of oscillation?

200 8 (c) Based on the graph, estimate the oscillation when the mass used
300 is 300 g.

(d) Predict the time of oscillation if a 600g of mass is used.
500 20

4. Solve the following problems.

(a) A man is pushing a trolley. What can he do to increase the inertia of the trolley?
_________________________________________________________________________________
(b) During accident, the inertia may cause the passenger to move forward and throw them against the
dashboard. State two features in car to prevent this situation.
