Commercialization of Education Essay

Commercialization of education has become a new trend that has resulted in reforms in the education sector. Many private institutions prioritize making money over truly educating students. This commercialization introduces financial requirements for education and changes the concept of education. While private schools can positively influence students' academic development through better teaching environments, the increased focus on profits has also raised costs and standards too high for many families. There is a need to change the education system to refocus on its true purpose of developing students' potential rather than treating it as simply a business.

COMMERCIALIZATION OF EDUCATION

In many institutes education is used more as a way to earn money than to literally educate
students. We see more and more private institutions that are more excited in snatching the money
from the parents than educated the enrolled students. Commercialization is a process that is
involved in making a product successful. Commercialization of education is a new trend that has
resulted in the reforms in the education sector. The commercialization of education can be seen
through the increase of private schools and institutions. This privatization has introduced the
financial element to qualifications necessary for education, especially higher education. This
commercialization has an effect on many households and therefore, changes the whole concept
of education. Commercialization of education needs structural adjustments, shifts in
accountability and reconceptualization of education system.

Schools are most important vehicle in transmitting the dominant culture. Through schooling,
each generation of young people is exposed to the existing norms, and value of culture. Private
schools have a major influence on academic development and overall character building of
children. It helps us to understand just why schools tend to maintain inequalities and elite repro-
duction. The quality of teacher-pupil interaction, better teaching, an atmosphere of cooperation
and healthy competition both and caring between teacher and students, and well-organized
course preparation of private schools are the influential factors that determine the better
performance of the students. These schools also provide superior learning environments in terms
of school organization, material resources, buildings, furniture, and well-equipped laboratories
with modem scientific instruments like TV, Internet, parks, etc. All these factors motivate
students for good performance.

“Private education can give you confidence, which is marvelous; a sense of entitlement isn't.”

Eddie Marsan

Just like the flip side of a coin, this increased trend of privatization is affecting the lives of many.
Private sector has raised the bars of their school standards too high that government schools are
unable to match up to their benchmarks. Modern schools have set their school fees upscale that it
is difficult for parents with meagre income to bear those and thus restricts their child’s admission
to such schools. The focus of private schools has shifted from providing education to earning
money. This can be very well clarified from the higher donations demanded for admission of
even a bright child by such institutions apart from the pricey fee structure. In order to maintain a
standard, these institutions strictly avoid admission of people from poor families, and thus such
children are deterred from procuring education from private schools of such standards.

Education is to bring out the potential in a learner by providing the learner the most congenial
physical and social environment to help him realize his fullest potential. Education on the other
hand is an industry and its commercialization is here to stay. At the end, we can say that for these
people education has today only become an option to make money than providing quality
education to students. There is strong need to change the basics of the education system, not its
pattern, in order to revive education's real importance.

“Education is that what remains after one has forgotten what one has learnt in school.”
Albert Einstein
