Ade.... Data Analysis Methods

Quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods are used to reduce large amounts of data into meaningful insights. Quantitative methods include descriptive statistics like means and frequencies to summarize data, and inferential statistics like t-tests to determine relationships. Qualitative methods analyze narratives, discourse, and grounded theories from sources like interviews to answer research questions. Common qualitative techniques are content analysis of texts, narrative analysis of stories, and discourse analysis of social contexts.

According to LeCompte and Schensul, research data analysis is a process used by researchers for

reducing data to a story and interpreting it to derive insights. The data analysis process helps in reducing
a large chunk of data into smaller fragments, which makes sense.

Analysis of Quantitative Data

Analyzing numeric information produces results from data. Interpreting data through analysis is key to
communicating results to stakeholders. The type of analysis depends on the research design, the types
of variables, and the distribution of the data. There are various data analysis methods of both research
techniques they include:

DATA ANALYSIS METHODS OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH:

Considering the two types of analysis in quantitative research: descriptive and inferential.

Descriptive Analysis

Descriptive analysis provides information on the basic qualities of data and includes descriptive statistics
such as range, minimum, maximum, and frequency. It also includes measures of central tendency such
as mean, median, mode, and standard deviation.

Inferential Analysis

Once the data have been appropriately described, inferences can be made based on that data.

Inferential analysis uses statistical tests to see whether an observed pattern is due to chance or due to
the program or intervention effects. Research often uses inferential analysis to determine if there is a
relationship between an intervention and an outcome as well as the strength of that relationship.

This section provides an overview of things to consider before starting inferential analysis, examples of
common statistical tests, and the meaning of statistical significance.

One of the first steps in inferential analysis is to answer the question what does the distribution of data
look like? The type of test used will be guided by the distribution of the data. Distributions fall into two
categories: normal and non-normal. The distribution of data should always be checked before beginning
inferential analysis.

DATA ANALYSIS METHODS OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH:

Several methods are available to analyze qualitative data. The most commonly used data analysis
methods are:

Content analysis: This is one of the most common methods to analyze qualitative data. It is used to
analyze documented information in the form of texts, media, or even physical items. When to use this
method depends on the research questions. Content analysis is usually used to analyze responses from
interviewees.
Narrative analysis: This method is used to analyze content from various sources, such as interviews of
respondents, observations from the field, or surveys. It focuses on using the stories and experiences
shared by people to answer the research questions.

Discourse analysis: Like narrative analysis, discourse analysis is used to analyze interactions with people.
However, it focuses on analyzing the social context in which the communication between the researcher
and the respondent occurred. Discourse analysis also looks at the respondent’s day-to-day environment
and uses that information during analysis.

Grounded theory: This refers to using qualitative data to explain why a certain phenomenon happened.
It does this by studying a variety of similar cases in different settings and using the data to derive causal
explanations. Researchers may alter the explanations or create new ones as they study more cases until
they arrive at an explanation that fits all cases.

These methods are the ones used most commonly. However, other data analysis methods, such as
conversational analysis, are also available.
