Scene I
The house of Yamunacharya. He is seated centre stage, at his desk, working on his
manuscript. He is seen writing, and looking up on and off.
Yamunacharya: Keeping his quill down, chants the verse from Bhagavad Gita very
slowly
thinks for a moment and writes as he dictates to himself, “But those who always worship
Me (looks at the Bhagavad Gita, pauses and continues) with exclusive devotion
(pauses, looks at Bhagavad Gita) meditating on My transcendental form (again looks at
Bhagavad Gita, frowns in thoughtful manner) – to them I carry what they lack – (again
frowns and talks to himself, looking up) How could the Lord mean that He carries what
the devotees lack, personally to them? He must mean that through His energies and
agents, He supplies what His devotees lack. (bends down, picks up quill and writes) –
“through My agents and energies I supply My devotees with what they lack (looks at
Bhagavad Gita again and writes) “and preserve what they have.” (Looks up then again
at his translation, and reads is over again) – “But those who always worship Me with
exclusive devotion, meditating on My transcendental form, through My agents and
energies, I supply what they lack and preserve what they have.” (Enter wife, puts quill
down and looks up)
Wife: It is quite late in the after noon and you have not yet had lunch.
Yamunacharya: Yes, I will go now to the river for a bath. You could get everything ready
for my lunch while I am gone. (gets up and leaves) (Exit wife)
Scene 2
The entrance to Yamunacharya’s house. Krishna and Balarama come staggering under
heavy loads and knock on the door. Wife opens and expresses surprise.
Balarama: Your learned husband has asked us to deliver these fruits and vegetables to
you, while he takes a bath.
Wife: But you are both too small to carry such heavy loads. How did you do it?
STHO L 6
Krishna: We have been staggering all the way to life these on our backs since we could
not disobey his orders.
Wife: You could have certainly asked him to allow you to carry half the load and made
two trips to bring it here – or maybe you could have suggested he sends it with someone
older and stronger.
Krishna: Oh, we tried to explain to him, mother, but all he gave us in reply was this
(turns around and shows His back with whip marks. Balarama also nods and shows her
His back)
Wife: What? He beat you both and hurt you? Oh! Poor young boys! Please come in
and let me soothe your wounds! Do come in! How could he even think of hurting such
lovely young lads?
Scene 3
(Wife has just set everything ready for Yamunacharya’s prasadam lunch. He enters from
the opposite side, and hands her the gamcha. He glances at the baskets/sacks)
Yamunacharya: Where have these fruits and vegetables come from? Who brought
them while I was away?
Yamunacharya: I?
Yamunacharya: Forget? But I just went and took a bath and returned straight here. I
didn’t stop to do anything else!
Wife: Then who sent those boys here with these heavy loads?
Yamunacharya: Young boys? Look - I know nothing of it? Who were those boys?
What did they look like? Tell me everything.
Wife: When you were away, two beautiful young boys came gasping under these heavy
loads, and told me that you had sent Them with these. One of Them was very fair, of
whitish complexion; the younger boy was dark. (she recollects dreamily). They were
both dressed in silken clothes and wore ornaments. Oh, they were such beautiful boys –
the most beautiful children I have ever seen. (shaking herself from her reverie, she
looks at her husband crossly) And they told me you forced Them to carry this burden
and beat Them when They suggested you send it with someone stronger.
Yamunacharya: What? Me, send Them? Beat Them? Wait – you said They were
bejewelled and of whitish and blackish hues?
Wife: (angrily) Yes – and they showed me the marks on Their backs, where you had
cruelly beaten Them!
Yamunacharya: (Holding his head in his hands) Oh! No! Now I understand! (turning
to her with disappointment and alarm) My dear wife, the blackish boy was none other
than our most worshippable Lord, Krishna – and the whitish boy, none other than –
Yamunacharya: (musingly) The Lord visited my house, but why? (thinks for a moment)
Yes! That’s it! I had written in my translation of the Bhagavad Gita sloka, that He
supplies His devotees with what they lack, through His energies and agents – but He
had come here Himself, with all these things for me. How unworthy am I, and how
merciful He is! He came here just to prove that He personally supplies His devotees –
not through His agents – (rushes to the desk and, taking the quill, strikes out what he
had written and reads) “But for those who always worship Me with exclusive devotion
meditating on My transcendental form – (writes and dictates) – to them I (stresses on
the word) carry what they lack, and I (stresses again) preserve what they have.”
Krishna does this personally, not through His agents – Do you understand? He came
personally to my hymble dwelling to prove to me that He supplies His devotees with
what they lack. And to teach me that, He came here to demonstrate, for me to
understand, because His devotees are very dear to Him. He does not allow a of doubt
to remain in their hearts – He cares so much, that He comes to prove it personally. I am
truly blessed today, and you are more blessed than me, since you actually purified your
vision with the vision of His transcendenal form.
