pushes the progress and differences solidify the common ground—sameness.
“BKL-Bikol Bakla Anthology” represents the collective beliefs, experiences, advocacies, and
literary prowess of Bicolano gay, trans, and queer community. Consisting of short stories and
poems from diverse Bicolano contributors, BKL promises a taste of rural mystery and another
door towards Bicol’s self-discovery.
That being said; the images they conjure through the use of words seem to intersect in the
line of understanding and deep well of relegated mysticism. Well, what more to unravel if
the treasure will just be handed on a silver platter?
In its sense, duality is mystery. One could never truly grasp the wholeness of things even
with all the clues. And that is what makes living an interesting phenomenon—what puts
BKL on the cline as an emergent literature.
Although the political and existential ideals present in BKL are nothing new, the book as a
symbol of coming out into the light of a conservative society is proving to be a heavy burden.
For the vision of freedom comes with a price.
On a general term, is the LGBTQ+ community prepared to sacrifice the sacredness of their
nights to the blistering eyes of day? With the first publishing of BKL (hopefully not really
the last), do they have enough courage to be fully immersed without losing their colors?
Because upon the struggle to dissect the book, beyond closed doors and silhouetted figure,
there is a hint of fear.
