PD: #2
DATE: 18/10/2020
TOPIC: Osmosis
AIM: To observe the process of osmosis and its effect due to different
concentration gradient.
HYPOTHESIS: If a carrot strip is placed in a concentrated solution, due to osmosis
water molecules from the carrot strip (less concentrated) will move into the
concentrated solution.
APPARATUS: 2 cups
2 carrot strips (1 inch by 1 inch)
Water
Measuring cup (1/3 cup)
Salt
Spoon
Knife
Ruler
PROCEDURES:
1. Gather and set up all materials.
2. Label 1 cup A and the other cup B.
3. Add 1/3 cups of water to cups A and B.
4. Add 4 teaspoons of salt to cup B.
5. Cut and measure 2 carrot strips 1 inch by 1 inch.
6. Place 1 carrot strip in cup A and the other carrot strip in Cup B.
7. Leave the carrot strips in the solutions for 4 hours.
8. After 4 hours, observe and record the results in a table format.
RESULTS:

B Salt-water 1 inch by Carrot

CONTROLLED VARIABLES:
1.The amount of water.
2. The size of carrot strip (1 inch by 1 inch)
3. The time carrot strips are left in solutions.
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE:
1. The concentration of the solution.
DEPENDENT VARIABLE:
1. The size of the carrot strip
2. The amount of water in carrot strip (rate of osmosis).
EXPECTED RESULTS:
It is expected that the concentrated salt solution will make the carrot strip
become shrivelled, flexible. This is due to the fact that water molecules from the
carrot will move into the concentrated salt solution.
DISCUSSION:
The concentrated salt solution will make the carrot strip become shrivelled and
flexible because water will move out of the carrot strip. This is because the water
molecules are trying to distribute themselves equally in order that concentration
in both the carrot strip and the salt solution become the same. The carrot strip in
just tap water will remain stiff and become swollen/turgid. This is because the
water molecules in the carrot will not have to move into the tap water because
the concentration gradient is almost the same. Also, tap water molecules can
move into the carrot strip to make the both solution become equal and become
isotonic.
A precaution would be to make sure that the salt solution is highly
concentrated. Another precaution would be to cut the carrot strips thin enough
so that water can easily move out.
A limitation would be that the thickness of both carrot strips aren’t exactly the
same and this can lead to a difference in mass.
A source of error can be that the carrot strip was not fully emersed in the water
making osmosis consistent through out the carrot strip. Another source of can be
that the carrot strips were not accurately measured to ensure that they have the
same length and width.
CONCLUSION:
It can be concluded that the process of osmosis and the effects of different
concentration was observed.
