Who should we blame?

The article wrote by F. Sionil Jose, “Why are Filipinos poor” pointed out aspects and explained

how it affected the economic progress of the Filipinos. It gave certain points that are evidently seen in our

society now.

As I was reading the article, I can’t seem grasp the emotion of the author towards his fellow

Filipinos; it was distant and full of sympathetic anger. The work of Mr. Jose became an article of blaming

instead or explaining why we are poor that could help us to find solutions instead of excuses. Our history

has been dark and its consequences is still being lived out today such as the debt we got from Marcos

regime or the influence of Western countries for making us prone to submission of power. These events

really did affect our progress however it helped us to be resilient and adaptive to change. Moreover, the

educational system has been also a problem in the Philippines. He said that it is too much or tiresome but

some do succeed in their own but not in their homeland. As we all know today, some Filipino students

aim to finish their studies and work abroad due to the lack of opportunity in the Philippines. We are far

behind in contributing to research, progress, and solutions. These students wants to be successful, not the

country to grow but we can’t blame them for that mindset which leads down to the statement “we are

poor because we are poor”. In his article, he opposed to this statement which I disagree to. Filipinos are

poor because they are really poor. History did change our perspective on things which became an innate

trait for us Filipinos in the course of time. Our education system is a problem due to having an innate

tendency to provide and to live, that’s why we prioritize on working for salary instead of enlightenment.

Our behaviors are caused by poverty and we can’t blame those Filipinos who do nothing during the day

because from the start they have been oppressed by those in power and been boxed to being poor. We

lack privilege because we are poor, we lack proficiency because we are poor, and we are in poverty

because the opportunity that we need are not given to us freely. Privilege, proficiency, opportunity are

essentials to economic progress and we don’t have them because we are poor. However, despite these
negative emphasis on our growth, we are still hoping, fighting and empathetic for progress that could

benefit all.
