Physics PDF

This document contains a physics tutorial sheet from Mulungushi University with 4 problems involving Newton's Laws of Motion. Problem 1 asks the student to calculate the angle and magnitude of force needed to immobilize a fractured femur using the Russell traction system. Problem 2 asks for the minimum horizontal force needed to cause one block to slide out from under another. Problem 3 provides constraints for material moving down a frictionless ramp, asking for the maximum ramp angle, exit speed, and normal force. Problem 4 asks for the maximum stretch of a spring attached to a box on an inclined plank before the box begins to move.

Tutorial Sheet 3 – Newton’s Laws of Motion

1. To immobilize a fractured femur (the thigh bone), doctors often utilize the Russell traction
system illustrated in the figure below. Notice that one force is applied directly to the knee,
F1, while two other forces, F2 and F3, are applied to the foot. The latter two forces combine
to give a force F2 + F3 that is transmitted through the lower leg to the knee. The result is that
the knee experiences the total force Ftotal = F1 + F2 + F3. The goal of this traction system is to
have Ftotal directly in line with the fractured femur, at an angle of 20.0° above the horizontal.
Find (a) the angle 𝜃 required to produce this alignment of Ftotal and (b) the magnitude of the
force, Ftotal, that is applied to the femur in this case. (Assume the pulleys are ideal.)

2. A wood block of mass 𝑚 = 500 𝑔 rests on a larger wood block of mass 𝑀 = 3 𝑘𝑔 that rests
on a wooden table. What is the minimum horizontal force, F, applied to the lower block that
will cause it to slide out from under the upper block?
3. You have been hired to help improve the material movement system at a manufacturing
plant. Boxes containing 22 𝑘𝑔 of tomato sauce in glass jars must slide from rest down a
frictionless roller ramp to the loading dock, but they must not accelerate at a rate that exceeds
2.5 𝑚/𝑠 2 because of safety concerns. (a) What is the maximum angle of inclination of the
ramp? (b) If the vertical distance the ramp must span is 1.2 𝑚, with what speed will the
boxes exit the bottom of the ramp? (c) What is the normal force on a box as it moves down
the ramp?

4. A 2.0-kg box rests on a plank that is inclined at an angle of 65° above the horizontal. The
upper end of the box is attached to a spring with a force constant of 360 N/m, as shown in the
figure. If the coefficient of static friction between the box and the plank is 0.22, what is the
maximum amount the spring can be stretched and the box remain at rest?
