OBJECTIVE
How can conducting
market research help us
produce a top notch
podcast?
MARKET RESEARCH
Now that you have short listed an idea, you need to conduct market research to
fully inform your intentions for the project and to assess the current market:

1. Find out what other podcasts/podcast episodes are in the market that are discussing the
same or similar topic
2. Listen to a similar podcast episode and make notes on the structure, content, duration and
presenting style of the episode
3. Are these podcast popular/successful?
4. Find out how the majority of audiences access podcast material e.g. Apple podcasts?
Spotify? YouTube?
5. What devices do audiences use to listen to podcasts?
6. Which age group engage with podcasts the most?

MARKET RESEARCH
Collate your findings into your Podcast Research Portfolio PowerPoint under a
new section titled Market Research (You should already have this PowerPoint
set up with your production research)
Remember to reference all of your findings

Write a summary of what you found out from each of your findings and discuss
how this will impact your own podcast idea
Suggested points:
Below are some example conclusions to guide you in what
to write in your analysis of findings:

1. I found out that there aren't that many podcasts that discuss the same
topic as my own proposed idea. This is a positive finding as it means there
is currently a gap in the podcast market for this subject. Hopefully this
would result in more listeners, engaging new audiences and a high
market share. I researched podcasts available across a range of different
platforms therefore, I believe my results to be quite reliable.
2. When listening to another podcast episode linked to my topic, I felt that the structure of the
episode was easy to follow and had clear transition points between each discussion point of
the episode. The podcast host had quite a monotone voice however, so I found it quite difficult
to listen to the entire episode. This reinforces the importance of developing an engaging
presenter tone and delivery to ensure that audiences listening to my episode don't get fed up
of listening because of my poor presentation skills. To ensure my presentation techniques are
as engaging as possible I am going to schedule in rehearsals in preparation for the final
recording of my own episode.

3. The quantitative data in my research tells me that the age range that listen to podcasts the
most are aged 26-35 years old. Therefore, I will need to allocate a fair amount of time towards
the marketing of my podcast to encourage and persuade 13-19 year olds to listen to my
podcast. I will market the podcast via the social media platform Instagram as my target
audience intereact with this platform several times a day so I am more likely to reach my
audience via this platform.
