1. Mount Everest actually isn’t the highest mountain in the world. Mauna Kea
is a dormant volcano on one of the Hawaii Islands, standing 4,207 m above the
sea level. Much of it is standing under water. Measured from the oceanic base,
it is over 10,000 m tall, so it is the world’s tallest mountain if measured from
the base to the summit, i.e. over twice taller than Mount Everest!
Its last eruption took place 4,000 or even 6,000 years ago. This volcano is about
one million years old. On its summit, there is an astronomic observatory with
13 telescopes.
2. The first ferris wheel in the world was built in Chicago, designed and
constructed by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. as a landmark for the 1893
World's Columbian Exposition. It was 80.4 m high and was constructed to
compete with 324-meter-high Eiffel Tower. After the exposition, it was
dismantled and later rebuilt in a different place in Chicago, next to an exclusive
neighborhood. After being exhibited in Saint Louis during World’s Fair, it was
finally destroyed by a controlled explosion in 1906, because a local resident did
not like it and did his best to get rid of it.
3. In Ireland, about 8 km from Cork, there is the Blarney Stone, built into the
Blarney Castle. According to a legend, kissing the stone makes you an orator.
Blarney means clever or flattering talk.
