Concept Notes:

What is Holistic Perspective?

 Requires individual to have an open mind set and an ability to get the general sense or impression
regarding a situation.
 Holistic is relating to the idea that things should be studied as a whole and not just as a
sum of their parts.
 Holistic: “incorporating the concept of holism or the idea that the whole is more than merely
the sum of its parts, in theory or practice” (Dictionary.com)
 Holism: (In philosophy) the theory that whole entities, as fundamental components of reality,
have an existence other than as the mere sum of their parts. (Dictionary.com)
What is Holistic Thinking?
 Refers to a perspective that considers large scale patterns in systems
 this is often described as looking at the big picture when describing and analyzing a situation
or problem
What is Holistic View?
 also gives rise to a more appreciative perspective about life, as we are able to look at life in its totality.
 this means that we try to understand a situation from different vantage points so we can see it
more fully
 all the positive and negative experiences in our life come together to give meaning to our existence,
and we learn to appreciate our individual experiences as vital aspects of a larger and more
meaningful life
Example:
 Holistic doctors don't just provide patients with medications. Instead, they look at ways to
improve life balance and eradicate health problems from their root source, such as high stress or bad
nutrition.

Concept Notes:

Partial point of view

 Is an important component of analytical thinking, as an individual focuses on certain areas or aspects of
a problem in order to understand it

Partial Thinking
 Focuses on specific aspects of a situation.
 Partial thinking is all about focussing on detail and usually on just one part of the whole.
 It allows you to be micro-focussed and to ‘forget’ the role that that part plays in the functioning of the
whole.

Example

 The farmers, in their desire to quickly eradicate the beetle problem as soon as possible chose to release
cane toads.

That decision resulted in an environmental disaster for the host country since the amphibians ate everything
they can catch. Native insects and other small animals have dwindled in numbers. The cane toads and their
tadpoles are poisonous so very few if any animals can control their population. Today the cane toad is
present in many countries and it looks like the situation is permanent.
