Guidance for Stress Mgt Counselling

• Look for specific issues

• Assess and analyze apparent problems

• Look for specific and focused solutions

• Look at strategic intervention:

– Is problem throughout the organization, or is it localized?

• Ensure evaluation and timely feedback

Stress Management Intervention

• The stress intervention can focus on the individual, the organization and
individual-organizational interface.

• Three levels of intervention:

1. Primary: Reducing the sources of organizational stress

2. Secondary: Stress management training

3. Tertiary: Health promotion & work place counselling


Relaxation

Ask the client to:

1. Do something he enjoy; whether indoors or out, alone or with others.

2. Do what is satisfying for him

3. Set aside time for himself

Exercise

 Exercise is a great way to relieve physical and mental tension


 Improves physical resistance to stress
 Choose an activity that appeals to your client

Visualization

Encourage day dreaming

• Picture a scene in which client is perfectly relaxed….. Perhaps he is lying at the


beach on a warm breezy day…. Ask him to continue to visualize this scene, noticing
the warmth of the sun on his body, feeling more relaxed, while his breathing
becomes slow and rhythmic.

Challenging self-destructive beliefs

• Eg-

1. I cannot perform in teams

2. My subordinates can never do a job perfectly

3. I cannot meet the standards because my peers are not cooperative

Life space mapping

Blind spot mapping-

• Used to do SWOT analysis

• Clarifies roles and goals

Assertiveness Training

• Train to stand up for your rights in such a way that the rights of others are not
violated

• Clients learn how to


– ask for feedback,

– give feedback,

– express acceptance of other points of view

Brief solution focused strategies

 Eg-

1. Time management

Role Plays

• Giving roles of superiors or subordinated

• Helps in understanding others situation

• Helps to understand your situation and where you stand in the organization

Self – portrait

• Helps the counsellor to understand the hidden feelings of the client

• Depicts how the client perceives himself

Educationally-Oriented Interventions

– Identify sources of stress

– Learn how it feels, how to avoid it, how to cope with it etc

– Uses theories of learning

Defusing

 A small group intervention applied within hours of a critical incident.

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing

 The goal of a Critical Incident Stress Debriefing is psychological closure.
