I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Identify the sewing tools and their uses.
2. Appreciate the importance of sewing.

Students are given a piece of paper with words and pictures on it. They will wait for the instruction of
the teacher. (They are to look for their partner based on what was written or the picture on their paper.)
Questions:
1. Based on your partner, what did you get?
2. What are these things called?
3. Where can they be used?

Measuring Tools
Tape Measure Use to take body measurements
Sewing Gauge Use to measure small areas such as seam allowance and hem
Meter Stick Use to measure cloth length; also cloth hem
Drafting Tools
L-square Use to draw perpendicular lines
Hip Curve Use to shape skirts, slacks specifically on the hiplines, hemlines, side seams and
lapels
French Curve Use to shape necklines, collars and armholes
Cutting Tools
Shears Use to cut fabric
Scissors Use to cut threads, trim, and clip seams
Pinking shears Use to finish seams of a lightweight fabric
Seam rippers Use to remove unwanted stitches
Marking Tools
Tracing wheel Use to transfer marks from patter or fabric
Dressmaker’s carbon paper Used with the tracing wheel to transfer pattern marks to fabric
Tailor’s chalk Use to make temporary guide marks or alteration marks on clothing
Sewing Aids
Hand needles Use to pass thread through cloth to make stitches
Straight pins Use to join fabric or patterns together
Pin cushion Use to hold pins and needles
Thimble Use to protect the fingers when pushing a needle
Thread Use to join two or more pieces of fabric together
Threader Use to facilitate threading

G. Application
Directions: The class will be divided into five (5) groups. Each group will be given pictures of the
different tools. They will be asked to explain each tool given to them and its proper usage. They will
report their results in front of the class for 2 mins.

Group 1: Identify measuring tools and its proper usage.


Group 2: Identify drafting tools and its proper usage.
Group 3: Identify cutting tools and its proper usage.
Group 4: Identify marking tools and its proper usage.
Group 5: Identify sewing aids tools and its proper usage.
