BASIC WIRELESS PROPOSAL 2

Apex Designs Basic Wireless Proposal

Apex Designs approached the Abbott, Meyers and Thomas group (AMT) asking for a

basic wireless proposal and our response on what we can assume from their written request.

Their request was to ask for wireless connectivity for their complete executive office suite that

covered all work areas with basic security in place. Apex forwarded a floor plan with basic

construction features in order to help determine our deployment strategy in lieu of an actual site

survey. Assumptions are that Apex has some sort of wired network or internet connection, has a

false ceiling, less than a hundred and fifty employees and does not have security guards checking

id cards and that the data is confidential, but not secret.

Hardware needed will be 1000ft Enhanced Category 6 Network Cable, three D-LINK

WNDR3800 N600 Wireless Dual Band Wireless routers and a D-Link DGS-1005G 5-Port

Gigabit Switch. Estimated cost of hardware will be six hundred and ten dollars. There will be

four ceiling or wall mounted units at a price unknown. There may be four to eight hours of labor

at a price unknown.

Deployment will happen in one or two nights. After a date is set, while the office is

closed or after regular business hours, after management has gathered and disclosed the MAC

addresses of each unit needing connectivity and carpenters have mounted the ceiling mounting

racks deployment will begin.

Mounting racks placed in the break room in the north east corner four feet from both

walls, above the cubicles near the second row from west centered three feet to the east of the

row, above the conference room directly center of the diagonal axis of the building and one

against the faux wall of the Kitchen, centered. The mounting of the racks are at the convenience

and purview of Apex sometime before the installation of the access points and switch.

More than two hundred and forty feet of cable placed in the drop ceiling, ran from the

data center units to the Break Room. The group will place router in the Conference Room

mounting. More than fifty foot of cabling placed in the ceiling from the Break Room to the

Conference Room. The group will place router in the Cubical Area mounting. More than two

hundred and forty feet of cable placed in the drop ceiling, ran from the Break Room to the

Cubicles. The group will place router in the Kitchen mounting. More than two hundred and forty

feet of cable placed in the drop ceiling, ran from the Break Room to the Kitchen.

Once connectivity established between test device, routers and internal wired network,

routers programmed with MAC filtering with MAC addresses disclosed by Apex. WEP

programmed with randomly generated keys of maximum length and shared with the managed

devices. When they connect for the first time to the network and as devices approved and MAC

addresses are given and randomly generated keys for WEP protocol. Instructions for

programming MAC addresses to routers written by AMT group and kept by Apex management.

AMT group suggests that upon termination that MAC address of terminated employees removed

from the router when or before they terminate.

Conclusion

Based on AMT’s assumptions, the Request for Proposal by Apex Designs suggests

installation of three wireless routers operating at both 2.5 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously

will fulfill the need for wireless connectivity at the 802.11n standard. That a simple high-speed

switch will allow the backbone to be scalable in case the company grows. The placement of

access points in locations that cover the whole workspace without much interference from

physical barriers or distance. Also by placing the access, points in the space between the drop

ceiling and the ceiling will give locations that are not easily accessible to persons unauthorized.

MAC filtering and long private WEP keys provide redundant security so confidential

information through common network intrusion techniques, cannot be accessed by unauthorized

persons.
