Performing IV cannulation
Assessment
1. Check order and verify for peripheral IV
2. Check for allergies
Planning
1. Gathers appropriate equipment’s
2. Perform handwashing
3. Correctly identifies the patient
4. Introduce yourself and explain the
procedure to the patient
5. Assess the patient and selects appropriate
vascular access device
6. Prepare all equipment before
venipuncture
Implementation
1. Applies tourniquet properly
2. Select site for venipuncture with regard to
procedure/treatment constraints. Patient
preference. Previous venipunctures.
History of
mastectomy/lymphadenopathy( when
applicable)
3. Correctly identifies needs and properly
applies warm packs
4. Cleanses area
5. Successfully performs venipuncture
6. Connects tubing and cap. Verifies
placement of the cannula.

Post procedure
1. Dress, tape the tubing and label the IV fluid
according to policy
2. Regulate the drip rate according to the
physician order
3. Assist patient to a comfortable position
4. Gather and discard disposable equipment.
5. Wash your hands
6. Documents according to policy
