POLLUTION DUE TO LACK OF SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL TREATMENT PLANT

IN CITY (BAREILLY, U.P.)

I. Introduction
The solid waste is rising in Bareilly Municipal Area. An increase in solid waste is observed because of increase
in urbanization, population density and income, changing food habits, taste and pattern. The growth of
industry, commercial units such as hotels, theaters, restaurants, malls are rising fast. Such units are
positively contributing to the solid waste generation.

Open dumping is the most common method of solid waste disposal in many developing countries including
urban areas. Negative environmental impacts from improper solid waste dumping can be easily observed
everywhere in the developing world.

II. Reasons For Open Dumping

Solid waste management system in the town is not effective as wastes are seen dumped on all manner of places
including roads, near sensitive areas, and on private properties. This could result in washout of disposal waste
into groundwater or stream and would pose risk to human health, the local
aquifer and the environment.

It can be observed that the collected solid waste is being transported in an

open body tractor trolley (fig.4) and in it is worth mentioning that in some
areas of Bareilly city, collected solid waste is being dumped on the ground
which is totally unhygienic. Masonry bins in the Bareilly city are also of great
concern for the solid waste management authorities.

III. Impact on Groundwater Table Map

In the environment, chemicals and other contaminants found in solid waste can seep into our groundwater and
can also be carried by rainwater to rivers and lakes that provide essential wildlife habitat. These contaminants
can also end up in our ground water, rivers and lakes that are our sources for drinking water.

IV. Associated negative environmental impacts due to improper solid waste

management in Bareilly City
Dispersed solid waste from the illegal open dumps often blocks the drains and sewers as shown in figure
7. Ultimately these blockages are creating flooding and unhygienic conditions in the city.

V. Disposal practices
Unfortunately, at present Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation have no appropriate landfill or waste disposal site.

VI. Serious environmental issues in study area due to open dumping

Open dumps of municipal solid waste are creating serious negative impacts on environment (fig.8).
• Dust and Filthy Dirt
• Odor
• Rats and other Vermin
• Toxic Gases
• Leachate
• Health and Sanitation

VII. Conclusion
Open dumps are responsible for the blockage of drains, breeding of flies and spread of epidemic diseases.
Hospital and other hazardous waste materials are being treated as ordinary waste. Considering the overall
negative impacts associated with open dumping and open burning, these practices must be strongly discharged.
