Reflections Geometry

This document provides a lesson on reflections in the coordinate plane. It defines a reflection as a transformation that uses a line to act like a mirror, reflecting an image across the line. Reflections are isometries that preserve lengths, angles, parallel lines, and distances. The lesson then gives rules for reflecting points across the x-axis, y-axis, and any given line. It provides examples of reflecting figures and finding the images of their vertices across various lines. Students are directed to complete practice problems to check their understanding of reflections.

Module: Transformations in the Coordinate Plane

Lesson: Reflections
Directions: Complete the guided notes below as you read the lesson in blackboard. You can add additional
notes or diagrams, if needed.
Lesson
A ______________________________ is a type of transformation that uses a line to act like a mirror, with an
image reflected in the line. The mirror line is the line of reflection. A ___________________________ is an
isometry, which preserves lengths, angle measures, parallel lines, and distances between points.

A reflection in the line m is a transformation that maps every point P in the plane to a point P′ such that the
following properties are true:

Reflections in Coordinate Plane

The _________________________________________ acts like a mirror between the preimage and its image.

Reflections in the coordinate axes can be found by applying the following rules:

1. If (x, y) is reflected in the ________________, its image is the point _____________.

2. If (x, y) is reflected in the ________________, its image is the point _____________.

3. If (x, y) is reflected in the line ________________, its image is the point _____________.
Examples
1. Figure ABCDE is reflected in the y-axis. Name the image of each vertex.

2. What type of reflection maps (3, 7) → (3, -7)?

3. Figure A(-5, 1) B(-1, 1) C(-4, 4) is reflected in the x-axis. Determine coordinates of A’.

4. Reflect the point (-2, 4) in the line x = 1.

5. Refer to ∆ GEO. Determine the image of each vertex and reflect the figure in the line y = x.

6. Refer to ∆ FEB. Reflect the figure in the line y = 2.

Self-Check: Complete the self-check problems in your Math Notebook. These problems are located at the end of
the lesson in blackboard.
