Design Portfolio Mohammad Monem 2020

The document provides a summary of several design projects by Mohammad Monem including: 1) A project to 3D scan and print replica glasses with the goal of transferring his lenses to the replica. He taught himself CAD tools to model the complex frame geometry. 2) A rover wheel design project where he iteratively designed and tested wheels for a Mars rover competition, leading to his team's design performing best. 3) An automated desk cleaning robot where he was responsible for the mechanical design and construction of a prototype robot to solve the problem of messy desks.

Mohammad Monem
3D Printed Glasses
Project Goal:

The goal of this personal project was to

challenge myself to CAD my glasses and 3D
print a replica of them, with a high enough
accuracy such that I could transfer the lenses of
my glasses to the replica and have them fit well.
Process
First, I took measurements of my glasses using a dial caliper. Next, I
began the process of creating a 3D model of the glasses in
CAD model of the
Autodesk Inventor, starting with the frame and then moving on to
frames
the sides. In order to create the complex geometry required for the
frame, I was required to teach myself many of the advanced tools
and functionality in the CAD software. Once the 3D model was
finished, I took the STL file to the 3D printer at my school and had
the glasses 3D-printed.

Afterwards, I removed the lenses of my glasses and placed them

into the replica, and they were able to be fitted securely into the
frame. The finished product was strong and comfortable enough to

be able to replace my previous glasses for daily use.

How I Would Improve this Project
If I had the chance to work on this project again, I would have modeled glasses that would fit the contours
of my head better than my actual glasses. To achieve this, I would use a 3D scanning device on my head so
that I could obtain a 3D representation of it. Then, I would use this model to aid me in designing glasses
that would better fit the specific shape of my head.
ENGR 100 Rover Challenge
Project Goal:

The goal of this project was to design rover

wheels able to handle a Mars-like terrain
with minimal wear and tear.
Process
Our first step was to come up with multiple designs for the wheels as a team
and collectively decide on the most effective option.

I proceeded to create a model of that wheel design in Inventor and then 3D

print it, while my teammates worked on the code and chassis of the rover. I
went through several iterations of the design, adjusting various parameters
such as width and diameter, until our team decided on the most optimal one.

We tested our design against 30 other teams through timed courses,

consisting of sand and gravel, that emulated Martian terrain. My wheels Second design
performed the best out of all wheel designs, running each course with the
fastest speed and minimal amounts of damage, leading to our rover achieving
overall best performance in the competition.

How I Would Improve this Project
To improve this project, I would have focused on making the wheels lighter without compromising on the
structural integrity. To achieve this I would have cut the excess material from the wheels by making the
spokes hollow and by removing parts of the wheel surface.
Automated Desk-Cleaning
Robot
Project Goal:

The goal of this project was to go through the entire

design process and create a product that solves an
everyday problem. The problem my team chose was
to solve was having a messy and unorganized desk.
Process
First I and my team defined the problem we wanted to solve, which was cleaning
up messy desks, and then brainstormed potential solutions. After deciding on a
solution we began to mock up some designs and created a CAD model of the
machine. Using the CAD model we built our prototype, and I was responsible for
the mechanical design and construction of the robot.

After building the robot my team tested it and I made optimizations to increase
its performance, such as changing the gear ratio of the mechanical arm and
CAD model of the robot
adding an light sensor, until the prototype was finalized.

I presented the prototype at the Annual Student Science and Engineering Fair, to
a panel of engineers from the industry and also received feedback from them. We
received awards for displaying an aptitude in engineering and innovation from a
member of Congress and the US Patent Office.

How I Would Improve this Project
To improve this project I would change the construction of the robot. I would have used Arduino instead
of the VEX microcontroller to power the robot, which would have given our team more variety in the
motors and sensors we could use. This would have allowed us to swap the ultrasonic sensor we used for a
Lidar sensor instead. I also would have used a closed kinematic linkage instead of the open design we
implemented for the arm, to reduce the number of motors we used and make the arm itself less
top-heavy and significantly more reliable.
Miniature Golf Course
Project Goal:

The goal of this project is to design and build a dynamic mechanical system in the
form of a Rube Goldberg-esque miniature golf course.
Process
I defined the functional requirements of my design, and came up with some initial designs. I then received
feedback from peers and the design instructor, and used that feedback to create more detailed designs. I
rated these designs using a Pugh chart and decided on the best overall design but choose to implement a
combination of each design.

I am currently doing empirical tests and first-principle models to evaluate this design further and make
changes based on the data I acquire.
