ENGINEERING HYDROLOGY ASSIGNMENT TWO FOR 3rd YEAR CIVIL ENG’G STUDENTS

1. A catchment area of 30km2 consists 40, 30 and 30 % of agricultural, forest and residential
land respectively with the longest watercourse stream of 195000m. The elevation of this
catchment at remotest area is 2000m while 1080m at outlet of the catchment and it has
average rainfall of 130mm. Calculate total direct runoff from the catchment if the runoff
coefficient of agricultural, forest and residential area are 0.4, 0.5 and 0.3 respectively.
2. The six-hour unit hydrograph of a watershed having a drainage area equal to 393 km2 is as
follows:
Time 0 6 12 18 24 30 36 42
3
OUH(m /s) 0 1.8 30.9 85.6 41.8 14.6 5.5 1.8
For a storm over the watershed having excess rainfall of 5cm for the first six hours and 15 cm
for the second six hours, compute the streamflow hydrograph, assuming a constant base flow of
100 m 3 /s.
3. Obtain a Unit Hydrograph for a basin of 282.6 km2 of area using the rainfall and streamflow
data tabulated below.

Time Observed Time Gross

(h) Hydrograph (h) Precipitation
(m3/s) (GRH)
(cm/h)
0 160 0-1 0.25
1 150 1-2 2.75
2 350 2-3 2.75
3 800 3-4 0.25
4 1200
5 900
6 750
7 550
8 350
9 225
10 150
11 140
For this problem, use the horizontal line method to separate the base flow. From observation of
the hydrograph data, the streamflow at the start of the rising limb of the hydrograph is 150 m3/s.
Thus, use 150 m3/s as the base flow.
4. A watershed has 2-hour unit hydrograph tabulated as follows:

(a) Plot the unit hydrograph and estimate the watershed area in acres.
(b) A 3-hour storm in the watershed is forecasted to have precipitations in hourly increment of
0.5, 1.5, and 0.6 in/hr starting at 3 PM on H-day. If the Ф-index of the watershed is 0.2 in/hr,
forecast the flood hydrograph produced by the storm assuming a constant base flow of 20 cfs,.
Note: Design an Excel table to determine the one-hour unit hydrograph by the S-curve method
for the forecasting.
(c) Plot the flood hydrograph and determine the peak discharge and occurring time.
5. The gross rainfall was 14mm for a storm of 3 hour duration on a watershed having 13.6 km2
