Have you seen things that look

different but are totally the same or

equal? In Mathematics, we have
numbers that may look different but have
the same value. Fractions and decimals
are rational numbers that are good
examples of this concept. Fractions can
be expressed as decimals and decimals
can also be expressed as fractions.
Let’s discuss more about “Rational
Numbers” in this presentation. Let’s start!

Rational Numbers
Are you now ready for
a new learning? Before
we start, kindly read
first our objectives
for this lesson.re
LESSON OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify rational expressions.
2. Convert mixed fractions to improper fraction and vice versa.
3. Convert fractions to decimal and vice versa.
Exploration:
I have a question. Is the quotient of two nonzero
integers always an integer? Consider the following
examples and answer the questions that follow. You may
get your notebook in Math and write your answers there.
Enjoy!

QUESTIONS:
1. 7 ÷ 2 = _____
1. Are quotients integers?
2. −25 ÷ 4 = _____ 2. What kind of numbers are they?

3. −6 ÷ −12 = _____
Exploration:
How was it? Were you able get it? I know you did. Now,
verify it by checking the correct answers below.

−6 2. What kind of numbers are they?
2. −25 ÷ 4 = _____4
Rational Numbers

3. −6 ÷ −12 = _____
As you go through this part, keep thinking about these questions:
• How do you convert fractions to decimals and decimals to
fractions?
• How useful are rational numbers in real-life?
You may check the next slide for the examples.

A rational number is any number which

can be written as a quotient of two integers
where the divisor is not zero. The word
“rational” comes from the word ratio which
means quotient.
Rational Numbers
- are numbers which can be written as a quotient of
𝑎
two integers, where 𝑏 ≠ 0.
𝑏

The following are more examples of rational numbers:

5= 0.06 = 1.3 =
1 100 10
−2 4 −189
−2 = 16 = 4 = − 1.89 =

numbers. Example: 0.8.
All repeating
non-terminating
decimals are rational
numbers. Example 0. 77.
You can watch the video
on the right from
YouTube to understand
the real-life applications
of rational numbers.
Let us also define what an irrational number is.

An irrational number is a number which

cannot be written as a quotient (or ratio) of two
integers.
Here are some examples;
✓ Many square roots are irrational, like 2 =
1.41421 … , 3 = 1.732050. .
(But not all square roots are irrational. Some
are rational like 4 = 2.)
✓ Pi(𝜋 = 3.1415 …).
Before we discuss about expressing rational
numbers from fraction form to decimal form and
vice versa, let us ponder on these questions:
1. What is a proper fraction?
2. What is an improper question?
3. What is a mixed fraction?
4. How will you change improper fraction to
mixed fraction?
5. How will you change mixed fraction to
improper fraction?
Can you recall these concepts? Let us check
by doing an activity on the next slide.
Let’s Try!
Change the following mixed fractions to improper fractions. You
may get your notebook in Math and write your answers there.

1. 5 3. 4
1 6
7 9

2. 3 4. 7
2 5
8 11
A. Changing Mixed Fractions to Improper Fractions

- multiply the denominator and the whole number,

then add the numerator. Then write down the result
above the denominator.
+ 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑢𝑙𝑡
𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒 =
x 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟
Examples:
+3 +2 37
1. 11 2. 5
2 = =
x4 x7 7

Answer Key
Change the following mixed fractions to improper fractions.

1. +5 12 3. +4 58
1x = 6 =
7 7 x9 9

2. +3 19 4. +7 62
2 = 5 =
x8 8 x 11 11
Let’s Try!
Change the following improper fractions to mixed fractions. You
may get your notebook in Math and write your answers there.

1. 28 3. 125
3 4

2. 59 4. 201
7 8
B. Changing Improper Fractions to Mixed Fractions

- divide the numerator by the denominator. Write down the

whole number answer. Then write down any remainder
above the denominator.
𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟
𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 ÷ 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 = 𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒
𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟

Examples:
1. 15 1 2. 29 2
=7 =9
2 2 3 3
Answer Key
Change the following improper fractions to mixed fractions.

1. 28 1 3. 125 1
