Once a beggar was begging at a railway station. The beggar had a few pencils in his begging bowl.
Many people were dropping coins while passing him. A young gentleman also dropped a five- rupee
coin in his begging bowl and hurried to a train waiting for a signal to leave the station. Suddenly, a
thought came to his mind. He got down from the train and went back to the beggar. He took five
pencils and said, “These pencils cost five rupees. After all, you are a businessman and so am I.”
[para 1]
After a year, the young man attended a business party. The man who was the beggar was also present
in the party. He was then in a suit and tie. The beggar recognised the young man and went to him. He
shook hands with the young man and said, “Do you recognise me?” The young man was puzzled and
said, “Who are you, sir?” [para 2]
The beggar then narrated the whole story to him. The young man soon recognised him and said, “Yes,
now I remember the incident. You were begging at the station… What are you doing here in your suit
and tie?” The beggar then replied, “You probably don’t realise what impression and message you had
left for me that day. You were the first person in my life who gave me back my dignity and identity.
You called me a businessman.” [para 3]
After you had left, I thought and asked myself, “What am I doing here? Why am I begging? And then,
I decided to do something constructive in my life. I threw my begging bowl then and there and started
working. Today, I am here; I just want to thank you for helping me realise my self-esteem and dignity.
That incident changed my life.”
The young man was really happy to know this and felt proud of himself that he could bring a positive
change in somebody’s life. [para 4]
