Experiment 1 Reaction of Aliphatic & Aromatic Hydrocarbon

The document describes an organic chemistry experiment involving the reactions of aliphatic and aromatic compounds. The objective is to study the reactions of 1-chlorobutane (KA1) and chlorobenzene (KA2). A series of tests are performed including solubility, ignition, Beilstein, silver nitrate, and sodium iodide reactions. Observations are recorded in a results table to analyze the properties and reactions of the two compounds.

SCES 3123 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Experiment 1

Title: Aliphatic and Aromatic Organic Compound

Objective: To Study the Reaction of Aliphatic and Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Materialats:

KA1 : 1-chlorobutane [CH3(CH2)3Cl]

KA2 : chlorobenzene ( C6H5Cl)
95% Ethanol
1M nitric acid
1M sulphuric acid (concentrated sulphuric acid)
0.1 M silver nitrate (AgNO3)
15% sodium iodide (NaI) in acetone solution

Apparatus per group:

1 test tube rack with 6 test tubes

1 test tube holder
1 glass rod
1 spatula
looped copper wire
1 Bunsen Burner
1 teat pipette (dropper)
lighter
1 wash bottle with distilled water
1 500ml beaker
2 100ml beakers
1 tripod stand and wire gauze
1 wooden splint

Procedures:

1. KA1 and KA2 are liquid aliphatic/aromatic halides. Carry out the following
experiment as in Result Table to study KA1 and KA2.
2. For all sets of tests, the reagent should be added gradually until no further
change is being observed.
3. Record your experiments’ observations and the deductions in Result Table.
4. Observations should include the clear details for the change of colour, formed
precipitates and test on gases evolved.
5. Conclude the reactions of KA1 and KA2.

Result Table for KA1 and KA2
Test Observation for Observation for
KA1 KA2

Solubility Test in Water

Add 5 -10 drops of distilled

water into a test tube. Then,
5-10 drops of KA1 are added
into the test tube and mixed
well. Repeat the same
procedures for KA2.

Solubility Test in Sulphuric

Acid

Carefully place 5 drops of the

conc. H2SO4 into a test tube.
Add 3 drops of KA1, then
gently tap the test tube and
swirl the solution. Repeat the
same procedures for KA2.

Ignition Test

Take a small amount of KA1

on a spatula and place it on a
hot Bunsen flame/ or place
small amount of KA1 in an
evaporaing dish, carefully
bringing a lighted match next
to the liquid surface Repeat
the same procedures for
KA2.

Beilstein Test

1. Clean a looped copper wire

by thrusting it into the tip of
the blue cone of a Bunsen
burner flame until it glows.
2. Allow the copper to cool to
room temperature, then dip
it into a test tube containing
5-10 drops of KA1, coating it
as much as possible.
3. Observe the colour of the
flame after heating.
4. Repeat the same
procedures for KA2.

2
Silver Nitrate Test

1. Add 5 drops of KA1 in about

5 drops of 95% EtOH. Add 1
drop of 0.1M AgNO3 in
ethanol and mix well. If no
precipitate forms in 5 min,
heat the mixture using hot
water bath (the ethanol
increases the solubility of
the immiscible
haloalkanes) and observe
the changes.
2. Add a few drops of 1 M nitric
acid to any precipitate that
formed and record any
changes.
3. Repeat the same
procedures for KA2.

Sodium Iodide (Finkelstein)

Test

1. Add 5-10 drops of KA1 in a

test tube.
2. Add 5-10 drops of 15% NaI
in acetone.
3. Shake the test tube, place
in the water bath for 3
minutes and observe the
formation of precipitate and
colour change.
4. Repeat the same
procedures for KA2.
