Spontaneous Generation Laboratory Activity 1

This document summarizes a student laboratory activity to disprove the theory of spontaneous generation. The student set up three experiments with meat in sealed containers. After several days of observation, no maggots appeared in the sealed container, while the open containers were eaten by cats before conclusions could be made. Based on no maggots appearing in the sealed container, the student concluded that maggots will not spontaneously generate from non-living meat.

SPONTANEOUS GENERATION
LABORATORY ACTIVITY 1

Objective:
To disprove the theory that maggots could be spontaneously generated from meat using a
controlled experiment

Observations:

Observe the appearance of maggots after several days. Continue the observation until you observe the
growth of maggots. Record your observations.

Set Up A Set Up B Set Up C

Not distinguished because Not distinguished because No maggots appeared
1. Growth of it was eaten by a cat it was eaten by a cat
maggots

Not distinguished because Not distinguished because Smelled like a rotten fish
2. Smell it was eaten by a cat it was eaten by a cat

Not distinguished because Not distinguished because Yellowish

3. Color of the meat it was eaten by a cat it was eaten by a cat

Not distinguished because Not distinguished because None

4. Growth of fungi it was eaten by a cat it was eaten by a cat

Conclusions:

I therefore conclude that maggots won’t appear from non-living just like the meat in set up c that is sealed
after 4 days there still no maggots appear. So that I disprove the theory that maggots could be
spontaneously generated from meat using a controlled experiment.

Post-Laboratory Questions:

1. What is a controlled experiment?

A controlled experiment is a scientific test that is directly manipulated by a scientist in order to test a single
variable at a time.

2. What are manipulated variables in this experiment?

The manipulated variables in this experiment are the following:
 A plastic jar
 A slice of meat
 A net
 Rubber band

3. Why do you observe growth of fungi in all set ups after several days of the experiment?
Because we need to disprove the theory that maggots could be spontaneously generated from meat
using a controlled experiment
