Modern Physics Paper 1

This document is a sample physics exam paper on modern physics. It contains 10 multiple choice and short answer questions. The questions cover topics like: 1) Uses of radioisotopes and the definition of work function. 2) Changes that occur when an alpha particle absorbs an electron or during thermionic emission. 3) Composition of alpha, beta, and gamma radiations. 4) Effects of emitting an alpha or beta particle on atomic number and why only gamma rays are not deflected by electric/magnetic fields. 5) Properties of beta rays and cathode rays. 6) Representing nuclear changes during alpha and beta decays of uranium and thorium

Sample Paper-1
MM.25

General Instruction:
I. All questions are compulsory.
II. Question No. 1 and 2 carry one mark each.
III. Question No. 3 to 5 carries two marks each.
IV. Question No. 6 to 9 carries three marks each.
V. Question No.10 carries 5 marks.

Question 1: (1)
State one use of radioisotopes.

Question 2: (1)
Define the term ‘work function’ of a metal.

Question 3: (2)
An alpha particle absorbs an electron. What does it change to?

Question 4: (2)
What is thermionic emission? Name two factors on which thermionic emission depends.

Question 5: (2)
What are α, β and γ radiations composed of?

Question 6: (3)
a. What happens to the atomic number of an element when it emits:
1. an alpha particle and
2. a beta particle.
b. Explain why alpha and beta particles are deflected in an electric or a magnetic field
but gamma rays are not deflected in such a field.

Question 7: (3)

Question 8: (3)
a. Define thermionic emission.
b. Mention one use of thermionic emission.
c. Name a substance which is a good thermionic emitter.
Question 9: (3)

thorium isotope decay by beta emission to an isotope of Protactinium (Pa). Write down the
equations to represent these two nuclear changes.

Question 10: (5)

a. Which radiation or particle from radioactive decay produces maximum biological
damage?
b. Show by equations, the effect on the proton number Z and the mass number A of the
parent nucleus brought about by the two types of radioactive decay.
c. Name the particles given out during radioactive decay.
