A 6-kg plastic tank that has a volume of 0.18 m^3 is filled with liquid water. Assuming the density of is
1000 kg/m^3, determine the weight of the combined system.

Solution: system’s weight= tank’s weight + water’s weight=

Mtank(9.81) + mwater (9.81)= mtank (9.81) + pwater ( vtank )(9.81 )

as water is a fluid taken the shape and of its container 6kg tank 0.18m³

system’s weight= 6(9.81) + 1000(0.18)(9.81)=1824.66 N

The mass of given substance= 1kg

1-N

2-kN

3-kg.m/s²

4-kgf

5-lbm.ft/s²

6-lbf

By using Newton’s second law, we calculate the weight

1-W=mg=1kg(9.8m/s²)=9.8N

2-W=mg=1kg(9.8m/s²) 1000=.0098kN

3-W=mg=1kg(9.8m/s²)=9.8kg.m/s²

/
4-W=mg=1kg(9.8m/s²)(1kgf) 9.8N=1kgf

/
5-W=mg=1kg(2.205lbm) (1kg)(32.2ft/s²)=71lbm.ft/s²
/ /
6-W=mg=1kg*2.205lbm 1kg*1lbf 32.2lb.ft/s²=2.2lbf

A 5-kg rock is thrown upward with a force of 150Ncat a location where the local government
acceleration is 9.79m/s². Determine the acceleration of the rock, in m/s².

Solution:

1-Mass of the rock (m)=5kg F=150N

2-The upward force (Fup)=150N

3-The gravitational acceleration (g)=9.79m/s²

W=mg

W=5*9.79=48.95N

FNet=[Fup-W]

FNet=[150-48.95]=101.05N 5kg

FNet=ma

101.05=5*a

A=101.05/5=20.21m/s²

a=20.21m/s²

At 45° latitude, the gravitational acceleration as a function of elevation z above sea level is given by g= a-
bz, where a = 9.807 m/s2 and b =3.32*10^-6 s^-2. Determine the height above sea level where the
weight of an object will decrease by 1 percent.

Solution:

at z=0 g0=9.807m/s²

Weight percent reduction=g0 -g0 /g 0 /

0.01=9.807-g 9.807

g= 9.70893m/s² 9.70893=9.807-3.32*10^-6*z

/
z=9.807-9.70893 3.32*10^-6=29539.156m

The boom of a fire truck raises a fireman (and his equipment—total weight 280 lbf) 40 ft into the air to
fight a building fire. (a) Showing all your work and using unity conversion ratios, calculate the work done
by the boom on the fireman in units of Btu. (b) If the useful power supplied by the boom to lift the
fireman is 3.50 hp, estimate how long it takes to lift the fireman.

Solution:

W=F*ΔX

W= 280*40=11200lbf.ft

Lbf.ft Btu (1) lbf.ft=(778.169)Btu

/
W= 11200lbf.ft*(1)Btu (778.169)lbf.ft=14.392Btu

(14.393Btu/3.50hp) (1hp/(0.7068Btu/s)) = 5.82s

Water at 20°C from a garden hose fills a 2.0 L container in 2.85 s. Using unity converstion ratios and
showing all your work, calculate the volume flow rate in liters per minute (Lpm) and the mass flow rate
in kg/s.

Solution:

1m^3=1000L 20degrees celcious is density=998kg/m^3

 (2L)/(2.85s) (60s/1min) =42.11 Lpm Kg/s

 (998kg/m^3)(1m^3/1000L)(2L/2.85s) = 0.700kg/s

A forklift raises a 90.5 kg crate 1.80 m. (a) Showing all your work and using unity conversion ratios,
calculate the work done by the forklift on the crane, in units of kJ. (b) If it takes 12.3 seconds to lift the
crate, calculate the useful power supplied to the crate in kilowatts.

Solution:

(Force)

 F=ma =(90.5kg)(9.81m/s^2) =887.81N 1.8m

(Work ) 90.5kg

 Work=fd =(887.81N)(1.80m) =1598.05 J or 1.5985kJ

(Power)

 P=W=J/s =1.5985kJ/12.3s =0.12996kW

The reactive force developed by a jet engine to push an airplane forward is called thrust, and the thrust
developed by the engine of a Boeing 777 is about 85,000 lbf. Express this thrust in N and kgf.
Solution:

 85000lbf ((32.2lbmft/s^2)/1lbf) ((0.4536kg)/1lbm) ((0.3048)/1ft) = 378410.1754N

 (378410.1754N)(1kgf/9.8N) = 38573.9221 kgf

A man goes to a traditional market to buy a steak for dinner. He finds a 12-oz steak (1 lbm = 16 oz) for
$3.15. He then goes to the adjacent international market and finds a 320-g steak of identical quality for
$3.30. Which steak is the better buy?

12oz steak 320g steak

$3.15 $3.30

Solution:

12ounce steak:

Unit Cost=($3.15/12oz) (16oz/1lbm) (1lbm/0.45359kg) = $9.26/kg

320g steak

Unit Cost=($3.30/320g) (1000g/1kg) = $10.3/kg

An airplane flies horizontally at 70 m/s. Its propeller delivers 1500 N of thrust (forward force) to
overcome aerodynamic drag (backward force). Using dimensional reasoning and unity converstion
ratios, calculate the useful power delivered by the propeller in units of kW and horsepower.

Solution:

(Kilo-watts)

PinkW=(1500N)(70m/s) (1kW/(1000Nm/s)) = 105 kW

(Mechanical Horsepower)

Pinhp=(105kW)(1.341hp/1kW) = 141hp
