CVE40002-S1-2020-Assignment 2

This document outlines Assignment 2 for a course on timber design. It instructs students to: 1. Calculate the design loads and capacities for a chosen lintel beam. 2. Calculate the axial and bending loads on a common stud supporting the first floor, walls, and roof, and check if it meets the combined loading standard. 3. Check the withdrawal capacity of nails in a roof batten-truss joint against uplift forces, using specifications in the Australian timber design standard. It provides details on what to include in calculations and notes on standards and submission instructions. The assignment is due by May 15th, 2020.

CVE40002~S1~2020

Assignment 2

For the double storey two house of Assignment 1a and 1 b, your task is to design two timber
members and one timber joint using the methodology in the lecture notes in accordance with
the Australian Standard for Timber Structures AS1720.1.

1. Choose one of the lintels in the first floor framing plan which you have already
selected. Provide full detailed calculation of the applied design actions (with all the
relevant combinations of dead and live loads) and the design capacities of bending
moments, shear force and deflection in accordance with AS17201.1 (7 Marks)

2. Choose a typical common stud in the lower floor supporting axial compressive loads
form the first floor, wall of the upper level and roof of the upper level. Provide full
detailed calculation of the axial loads (due to floor loads, walls of the upper level and
the roof) and bending moment (due to lateral wind loading) derived from the Australian
Standard for Wind loads in Housing AS4055, assuming Wind classification N2. Check
the combined actions of the axial compression and bending moments on the typical
common stud. (7 Marks)

3. Check the nailed joint between a typical roof batten and the top chord of the roof truss
as shown below for uplift force using 3.15mm diameter X 75 mm long plain shank
nails. Determine the nett uplift force on a typical roof batten within 1200mm form the
roof edge and assume N2 wind classification. Provide detailed calculations for the
withdrawal capacity of the nailed joint in accordance with AS1720.1. (6 Marks)

Please note the following:

1. STUDENTS SHOULD KEEP A COPY OF ALL ASSESSMENT THAT IS

SUBMITTED.
2. Students are to complete the assignment in groups of maximum 2 students per group.
Individual submission will also be accepted.
3. Students shall ensure they are using the latest version of all Australia Standards
(including amendments).
4. The information and tables in the lecture notes (e.g. extracts from various Australian
Standards) was current at the time of their production and is intended for teaching design
theory only. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they are using the latest revision of
the relevant Australian Standard.
5. Your submission should include the assignment submission cover sheet which can be
downloaded from CANVAS.
