CVE40002-S1-2020-Assignment 2
Assignment 2
For the double storey two house of Assignment 1a and 1 b, your task is to design two timber
members and one timber joint using the methodology in the lecture notes in accordance with
the Australian Standard for Timber Structures AS1720.1.
1. Choose one of the lintels in the first floor framing plan which you have already
selected. Provide full detailed calculation of the applied design actions (with all the
relevant combinations of dead and live loads) and the design capacities of bending
moments, shear force and deflection in accordance with AS17201.1 (7 Marks)
2. Choose a typical common stud in the lower floor supporting axial compressive loads
form the first floor, wall of the upper level and roof of the upper level. Provide full
detailed calculation of the axial loads (due to floor loads, walls of the upper level and
the roof) and bending moment (due to lateral wind loading) derived from the Australian
Standard for Wind loads in Housing AS4055, assuming Wind classification N2. Check
the combined actions of the axial compression and bending moments on the typical
common stud. (7 Marks)
3. Check the nailed joint between a typical roof batten and the top chord of the roof truss
as shown below for uplift force using 3.15mm diameter X 75 mm long plain shank
nails. Determine the nett uplift force on a typical roof batten within 1200mm form the
roof edge and assume N2 wind classification. Provide detailed calculations for the
withdrawal capacity of the nailed joint in accordance with AS1720.1. (6 Marks)
