“Pettyjohn Pottery”
Modern pottery made by Jon and his wife Tessy Pettyjohn who are both
recognized as pioneers of modern Philippine pottery.
INTERNATIONAL
LOCAL
The decorative art is expressed through pottery, one of the oldest and most widespread of
decorative arts made of clay, expressed by Pettyjohn in a modern look.
INTERNATIONAL
The art form is a broken ceramic mended with gold which symbolizes that flaws and
imperfections can be beautiful, too, sometimes, even more beautiful than the original piece.
LOCAL
It is often said that whenever you make something, you leave a part of yourself in it, and
that’s exactly how Pettyjohn expresses their creativity through their potteries. Starting from
contemporary designs, they evolved their masterpieces to fit the taste of the modern market,
showcasing their adaptability and mastery to shift from technique to technique.
INTERNATIONAL
Although kuntsurugi is not de Vries’ original discovery, it just shows that even
between different nationalities, people can be connected by art. The artist showed that broken
things are not meant to be thrown away easily, like what we usually do in this disposable world
we live in.
