Lecture 1 Solutions PDF

The document provides three examples of pump efficiency calculations. Example 1 calculates the overall efficiency of a pump system to be 40%. Example 2 estimates the efficiency of a motor given its power supply, maximum speed, and torque to be 76%. Example 3 calculates the overall efficiency of a pump system to be 62.6% and the break horse power to be 5 HP.

Example 1-1

A pump designed to move a discharge of 0.015 m3/s

against a head of 7.2m. (ignore the losses in the
pipeline).
The pump motor connects to 220v electrical supply
with 12A current. Calculate the overall efficiency of
the pumping system.

Electrical Mechanical
Power (T.ω) Hydraulic power (QρgH)
Power (V.I)
Motors Pump
ηm Shaft ηp (Output)
Input power

Overall Efficiency = motor effic * pump effic

= ηm * ηp

Tω ρgQH
= ×
VI Tω

= QρgH / VI
= 0.015 * 1000*9.81*7.2 / (220*12)

= 40%
Example 1-2

A pump catalogue presents the following characteristics.

Estimate the efficiency of the motor when it runs it’s
maximum speed.

Power supply
Voltage = 220V
Current = 10A

Motor specifications
Max. Speed = 2000rpm
Max. torque = 8Nm

output SP Tω
Motor efficiency = ηm = = =
Input EP VI

Angular speed ω = 2πN/60

= 2*3.14 * 2000/60
= 209.4

Motor efficiency = 209.4 * 8 / (220*10)

= 0.76
= 76%
Example 1-3
A pump must move a discharge of 0.031 m3/s
against a head of 9.1 m. Total head loss in the
pipeline system is 1.2m. If the pump is driven by a
5-kW motor with an efficiency of 75%, what is the
overall efficiency and break horse power?
Electrical Mechanical
power (T.ω) Hydraulic power (QρgH)
power (V.I)
Motors Pump
ηm Shaft ηp (Output)
Input power

Q=0.031 m3/s
5kW 75% H=9.1 + 1.2m

Overall Efficiency = Output / input

= QρgH / VI
= 0.031 * 1000*9.81*(9.1+1.2) / 5000
= 62.6%.

Overall Efficiency = ηm * ηp
62.6% = 75% * ηp
ηp = 62.6/75 = 83.5%

ηp = [Water horse power (Water hp)] / [break horse power (bhp)]

0.031× 1000 × 9.81× 10.3 / 745

83.5% = bhp

Break horse power = 5 HP
