LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Mathematics 5 - Solve Problems on Divisibility Rules

I. Introduction
We encounter numbers in our daily life that can be use in dealing in real life
situation. Numbers are ingredients for mathematical thinking and process.
The more you know and understand numbers, the better you'll be able to
work with those numbers to describe situations, solve problems, and reason
mathematically.

In these Learning Activity Sheet, you will learn how to solve routine problem
solving that involves using at least one of the four basic operation and/or
ratio to solve problems that are practical in nature while on-routine problem
solving is mostly concerned with developing your mathematical reasoning
power and skills.

II. Learning Competency

This Learning Activity Sheets was designed and written with you in mind. It
is here to help you how to solve routine and non-routine problems involving
factors, multiples and divisibility rules for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.
(M5NS-Ic-59)

III. Objectives
After going through this Learning Activity Sheets, you are expected to:

1. solve routine and non-routine problems involving factors, multiples and

divisibility rules for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12. (M5NS-Ic-59);
2. write the equation and the solutions of word problem involving operation;
3. work with enjoyment.

1
IV.Discussion
There are two types of word problems you may encounter, it could be:

❖ Routine problem-solving which is concerned with problems that are

useful for daily living, or may be a,

❖ Non-routine problem-solving which is mostly concerned with

developing the pupil’s mathematical reasoning power and fostering
an understanding that mathematics is a creative endeavor.

❖ Routine Problem Solution

Read the problem:

Mrs. Santos scheduled her class for an outdoor activity. The

class she handles has 40 pupils. However, she is having a hard time
deciding how to group the class without any pupils being left behind.
Can she group the class into 2, 4, 5, or 10 without any pupils being
left behind?

Using POLYA’S four-step plan

1. Understand

What is asked for?

Can she group the class into 2, 4, 5, or 10 without any pupils being
left behind?

What are the given facts?

• 40 pupils
• group of 2,4, 5, and 10

What operation
• Division

2
2. Plan
What is the number sentence?

40 ÷ 2 = N
40 ÷ 4 = N
40 ÷ 5 = N
40 ÷ 10 = N

3. Solve
40 ÷ 2 = 20
40 ÷ 4 = 10
40 ÷ 5 = 8
40 ÷ 10 = 4

4. Check:
20 x 2 = 40
10 x 4 = 40
8x5 = 40
4 x 10 = 40

Answer: Yes, no pupils left behind

❖ Non-Routine Solution

Read the problem:

Mrs. Santos scheduled her class for an outdoor activity. The class
she handles has 40 pupils. However, she is having a hard time deciding
how to group the class without any pupils being left behind. Can she
group the class into 2, 4, 5, or 10 without any pupils being left behind?

Solution:

A. Find the factors of 40.

40 = 4 x 10 = 2×2×2×5

3
B. Get the numbers (once) on the given factors.
Then find the multiples of each number till you reach 40.

Multiples of 𝟐 = 𝟐, 𝟒, 6, 𝟖, 10, 12, 14, 𝟏𝟔, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30,
32, 34, 36, 38, 40
4 = 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40
5 = 5,10,15, 20 ,25, 30, 35, 40
10 = 10, 20, 30, 40

C. Identify the number that can divide 40 equally.

40 ÷ 2 = 20
40 ÷ 4 = 10
40 ÷ 5 = 8
40 ÷ 10 = 4

Answer: Yes, no pupils left behind
