Target Task: Calculating the unknown side of a right angled triangle given the length of one
side and a given angle.
Pre Knowledge: Computation, ratios, concept of angles, concept of right angled triangles,
concept of hypotenuse of a right angled triangle, identifying right angled triangles, labelling the
sides of right angled triangle, concept of Pythagoras Theorem, calculating an unknown side of a
right angled triangle using Pythagoras Theorem, concept of the side adjacent and opposite to the
angle, concept of sine/cosine/tangent, calculating the sine/cosine/tangent of angles using a
calculator, sine/cosine/tangent ratios.
Behaviour Chain:
1. Read the question to identify whether the triangle given is a right angled triangle. If it is,
proceed to step 2
2. Locate the angle given in the triangle (not the 90 degree angle)
3. Based on the location of the angle, label your right angled triangle
4. Locate the side next to the angle, label this side the adjacent side “adj”
5. Locate the side opposite to the angle, label this side the opposite side “opp”
6. Locate the side opposite the right angle, label this side the hypotenuse “hyp”
7. Determine which length is given in the question (adj, opp, hyp)
8. Determine which side is the unknown side (adj, opp, hyp)
9. If we are given the length of the opposite side and want to determine the hypotenuse or
vice versa skip to step 12
10. If we are given the length of the adjacent side and want to determine the hypotenuse or
vice versa skip to step 13
11. If we are given the length of the opposite side and want to determine the adjacent side or
vice versa skip to step 14

12. Substitute the values into the sine ratio formula sin 𝜃 = ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
13. Substitute the values into the cosine ratio formula cos 𝜃 = ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
14. Substitute the values into the tangent ratio formula tan 𝜃 = 𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
15. Make the unknown side the subject of the formula and solve to find its length
