LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 8 SCIENCE

Content standard: How cells divide to produce new cells.

Performance Standard: Report on the importance of variation in plant and animal breeding.

Learning Competency: Compare mitosis and meiosis, and their role in the cell-division cycle.

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion the students should be able to;
1. Identify the stages of mitosis
2. Describe the events that occur in each stage

II. SUBJECT MATTER: Stages of mitosis

A. References: Grade 8 learner’s module (p. 317-321)

B. Materials:

TV, laptop, visual aids, Cartolina, scissors, bond paper, glue, scotch tape, video
presentation,

C. Skills
Identifying and describing

D. Science concepts
1. Stages of mitosis
2. Events that occur in each stage

III. METHODOLOGY
A. ELICIT
1. Prayer
2. Checking of attendance
3. Review previous lesson.
1. What are the stages of cell cycle?
2. What events occur in interphase?

B. ENGAGE
Motivation:

A Picture of a wound will be shown.

1. Have you ever wondered how our wounds heal?

Reading of learning objectives

C. EXPLORE
Activity 1:
The students will be given activity sheets by group. They will label the pictures with the
corresponding stages of mitosis.
D. EXPLAIN
The students will present their output.
The teacher will describe the stages of cell division and the events in each stage.

E. ELABORATE
1. What are the stages of mitosis?
2. What happens in prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase?
3. What will happen if our cells fail to divide?

F. EVALUATE

Instruction: Identify what stage of mitosis does the ff. events occur.

1. The nuclear membrane and nucleoli are still present.

2. Fiber binds to the kinetochore.
3. The chromosomes are now on the opposite poles of the spindle fiber.
4. Spindle fibers are formed.
5. Two chromatids are produced.
6. There are now full-pledged chromosome with one sister chromatids.
7. Chromosomes start to uncoil.
8. It is where the cytoplasm divides to form two separate daughter cells.
9. The paired centromeres of each paired chromosome separate towards the opposite
poles.
10. A new nuclear membrane is formed.

Answers: 5. Prophase
6. Anaphase
1. Prophase 7. Telophase
2. Metaphase 8. Telophase
3. Telophase 9. Anaphase
4. Metaphase 10. Telophase
