NEGATION

(Negacija)
Negacija je gramatička konstrukcija koja proturječi ili negira cijeli ili dio značenja rečenice.
U engleskom jeziku u rečenici ne smije biti dvostruka negacija!
I don’t know nobody here. I don't know anybody here.
I can’t find no books. I can't find any books.

Nekoliko je načina tvorbe negacije u engleskom:

1. NOT na pomoćnom ili modalnom glagolu
I am not from Germany.

I do not like playing tennis.

She does not listen to classical music.

I have not read this book yet.

I did not go to Moscow.

You should not sleep late.

I will not participate in that competition.

2. Negacijske riječi NO, NOTHING, NO ONE, NOBODY, NEVER

Kad je u rečenici neka od ovih riječi, ne smijemo pisati NOT na glagolu!

There is no milk in the fridge.

He did nothing to help us.

We called but no one/nobody answered.

We never work at night.

PAZI!

Riječi ANY, ANYTHING ANYBODY, ANYONE nisu same po sebi negacijske riječi u engleskom, iako
dolaze samo u negacijskim rečenicama. Kad su te riječi u rečenici, moramo pisati NOT na glagolu!

He revealed no information. --- He didn’t reveal any information.

They did nothing to stop him. --- They didn’t do anything to stop him.
There is nobody in this room. --- There isn’t anybody in this room.
3. Prijedlog WITHOUT
WITHOUT + ANY WITH + NO
There are students without any money. There are students with no money.

4. Izrazi za količinu MUCH, MANY, FEW, LITTLE

little (uz nebrojive imenice) = 'not much'
few (uz brojive imenice) = 'not many’

MUCH / MANY + NOT na glagolu

There isn’t much time left.
There weren’t many people at the party.

FEW / LITTLE bez NOT na glagolu

There is little time left.
There were few people at the party.

5. Tvorba negacije prilogom HARDLY

HARDLY = ALMOST NOT (skoro nije/ne)

Science hardly makes sense. (Science almost doesn’t make sense.)

He hardly knew his father. (He almost didn’t know his father.)

HARDLY EVER = ALMOST NEVER (skoro nikada)

She hardly ever eats fish. (She almost never eats fish.)

HARDLY ANY = ALMOST NO (skoro nitko/ništa)

There were hardly any passengers. (There were almost no passengers.)

There is hardly any traffic. (There is almost no traffic.)

6./32. Change the words in italics and use the words in brackets to paraphrase the sentences.

1. There isn’t anything interesting in them. (nothing)

There is nothing interesting in them.

2. We haven’t got much time to finish. (little)

6. There aren’t many facts in this book. (few)

There are few facts in this book.

8./32. Use hardly to paraphrase the sentences.
