cs4471 Spanning Tree Protocol Lab

This document describes a lab assignment involving the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP). The student is asked to: 1) Create a network topology in Cisco Packet Tracer with 3 switches and 3 PCs, configure IP addresses and hostnames, connect the devices, and verify connectivity. 2) Determine the STP root bridge, root ports, forwarding ports, and blocked port. The student must support their answers with screenshots from the switches. 3) Explain which network links ICMP ping packets from PC1 to PC2 would traverse. 4) Describe what would happen to the originally blocked port if the root port on its switch was administratively shut down.

CS4471 Spanning Tree Protocol Lab (version 1.

5)
Name___________________
CIN_____________________
Group___________________

1. (4 pts) Use Cisco Packet Tracer to create the network shown below containing 3 interconnected Ethernet switches
and 3 computers.
a. configure the hostnames as shown for all six devices
b. configure each switch port shown to be in vlan 2
c. configure IP address and subnet mask of all six devices as shown. IP address of each switch should be configured
in interface vlan2
d. interconnect the six devices with appropriate Ethernet cables and verify that all six links are up
e. verify that from PC1, you can ping the IP address of the other five devices
f. configure spanning-tree priority of each switch with values shown.
g. submit screenshot of Cisco Packet Tracer network diagram created. Make sure that the port labels are shown
(Options->Preferences->Show Port Labels)
h. submit printout of output of “show running-config” of each switch

2. (6 pts)

a. Which switch is the root bridge?

Support your answer with an appropriate screenshot of “show spanning-tree” executed on the root bridge.

b. Which switch ports will become a Spanning-Tree Protocol root port?

Support your answer with screenshots of “show spanning-tree” executed on switches containing a root port

c. Which switch port(s) on each switch will Spanning-Tree Protocol place into forwarding state?
Support your answer with screenshots.

d. Which switch ports(s) on which switch will Spanning-Tree Protocol place into blocking state?
Support your answer with a screenshot of “show spanning-tree” executed on switch with blocked port.

e. If PC1 were to send ICMP ping packets to PC2, which network links will the packets traverse?

f. On the switch that has a STP blocked port, what will spanning tree protocol do to this port if you were to
administratively “shutdown” this switch’s original STP root port?
