CSE-0201; Discrete Mathematics
(You can take help from the answers given in the book, but you have to explain the answer,
that will indicate that you have understood the problem and the solution. Just writing down the
number as your answer won’t be acceptable)
1 There are 18 mathematics majors and 325 computer science majors at a college.
a) How many ways are there to pick two representatives so that one is a
mathematics major and the other one is a computer science major?
b) How many ways are there to pick one representative who is either a
mathematics major or a computer science major?
2 A multiple choice test contains 10 questions. There are four possible answers for each
question.
a) How many ways can a student answer the questions on the test if the student
answers every question?
b) How many ways can a student answer the questions on the test if the student
can leave answers blank?
4 A drawer contains a dozen brown socks and a dozen black socks, all unmatched. A
man takes socks out at random in the dark.
a) How many socks must he take out to be sure that he has at least two socks of
the same color?
b) How many socks must he take out to be sure that he has at least two black
socks?
5 Show that among any group of nine integers, there are three integers with the same
remainder when divided by 4.
6 What is the minimum number of students, each of whom comes from one of the 50
states, who must be enrolled in a university to guarantee that there are at least 100 who
come from the same state?
9 A coin is flipped 10 times where each flip comes up either heads or tails. How many

c) Contain at most three tails?
d) Contain the same number of heads and tails?
10 How many ways are there for eight men and five women to stand in a line so that no
two women stand next to each other? [Hint: First position the men and then consider
possible positions for the women]
11 Find the probability that a positive integer <= 100 is divisible either by 2 or 5.
12 Suppose that a die is biased so that 3 appears twice as often as each other number,
but that the other five outcomes are equally likely. What is the probability that an odd
number appears when we roll the die?
13 What is the probability that a family has two boys given that they have at least one boy.
Assume the probability of having a girl or a boy is equal.
