For A Great Video On Better Conversations
they
say? How can your listening generate value and make all conversations constructive?
Focus: Let your colleague speak freely; block out your agenda (what you want from the discussion). Be
ready to summarize their output before adding your input. Give time to reflect, hold back your reactions.
Don’t interrupt! Don’t disagree! LISTEN and EXPLORE options with your colleague using the below:
Be Open Minded: The easiest way to stay on your colleague’s agenda is to ask open questions and be
open minded with their responses. “What’s the opportunity here?” “How do you feel about it?” What’s
challenging?” “What ideas do you have?”
Probe: This is a good start to collaborating with your colleague. It keeps the focus on them and helps them
to think deeper and wider. “What’s possible?” “What’s your desired outcome?” “What if your plan works
out?” “What happens if you do take action, or don’t take action?”
Clarify: Do this to make sure you understand what is being shared, and your colleague means what they
say. “Are you talking about…?” “This is my understanding…is that correct?” “Do you mean ‘A’ or do you
mean ‘B’?”
Summarize: Repeat your colleague’s key points to demonstrate you are following their thoughts and help
them to confirm their true feelings or intent. “So to summarize…” “What I’m hearing is…”
Connect: Humans are emotional, and if you are focused, you should be able to recognize if your colleague
is excited, frustrated, optimistic, pessimistic etc. It is effective to connect to these and reinforce positive
emotions, and support their overcoming negative ones. Call it out as you see it. “Sounds like you are
excited! How can we leverage that energy in this situation?” “Seems you are concerned about… How can
we overcome this?”
“There is no reason to learn how to show you're Review and Commit: Take your colleague to the next stage, by the reviewing the ideas generated, and
paying attention if you are in fact paying attention!“ encouraging them to select and commit to applying them. “What is your conclusion on next steps?” “What
