Management is the integrating force in all organized activity. Whenever two or more people work
together to attain a common objectives, they have to co-ordinate their activities. They also have to
organize and utilize their resources in such way to optimize the result.
Management is not unique to business organization but common to all kinds of social organization. All
kinds of organizations need management. It is the specific organ of organizations since they all need to
utilize their limited resources most effectively and efficiently for the achievement of their goal. It is the
most vital forces in the successful performance of all kinds of organized social activities.
According to James L Lundy, ”Management is principally the task of planning, coordinating, motivating
and controlling the efforts of others toward a specific objective.”
According to Henry L Sisk, ”Management is the coordination of resources through the process of
planning, organizing, directing and controlling in order to attain stated objectives.”
According to Henry Fayol, “To manage is to forecast and plan, to organize, to compound, to
coordinate, to control.”
According to Koontz, “Management is the art of getting things done through and within a formally
organized group.”
According to Terry, “Management is not people; it’s an activity like walking, reading, swimming,
running. People who perform management can be designated as members and executive leaders.”
