Course Syllabus
SERIAL NUMBER: K0094
COURSE LEARNING
OUTCOMES: This course includes an introduction to data communications concepts. Discussion also includes functions and characteristics of the OSI reference model,
client-server environment administration of computer networks, network services, and device configuration, backup and restore, process/task automation
and file system. Laboratory highlights include discussion and practice on structured cabling, network adapter installation and configuration, and computer
communications. Various LAN (Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Token-Ring) and WAN (Dial-up, Dedicated, Frame Relay, ATM) technologies
will be covered.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: After successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. recognize why computer networks exist and how it has evolved over the years;
2. describe the significant organizations, global and regional, responsible for defining specifications and standards in computer networking, as well as the
OSI Seven-Layer Reference Model;
3. explain the physical details involved in the exchange of information between electronic devices;
4. identify the various widely available network technologies used in interconnecting computers;
5. explain the significance of the Internet Protocol (IP) within the Internet, and how it is used and going to be used in the future;
6. explain the significance of the transport and session layer features, i.e., flow control and data integrity;
7. identify the various common network services based on IP and how each operates to be of value to the end-user;
8. identify the various hardware and software components that make up a computer network; and
9. identify the different considerations to be taken into account when organizing and managing a computer network.
