IRC: 82-2015 definition of distresses and severity level
Recording severity level of distresses provides significant insight about health of pavement. The distresses in pavements are
demonstrated by the severity levels of distresses and their extent. Therefore, treatment for a distress depends on the distress’s severity
level. The Table below provides details of pavement distresses and severity levels in bituminous pavements.

Appendix – B:
Steps to calculate pavement condition index/rating using IRC: 82-2015
The steps to calculate pavement condition index/rating using IRC: 82-2015 is described as
follows:
Step-1: Individual distresses measured from field will be assigned rating value using Table
5.2, section 5.1 IRC:82-2015 (reproduced in this document, Table C). The ratings
value for each individual distress can be 1, 1.1 to 2.0, and 2.1 to 3.0 which
corresponds to poor, fair and good condition of road respectively.
Step-2: The rating values obtained from step-1 will be multiplied by an appropriate
weightage (from Appendix 4, Table-1 (reproduced in this document, Table D)) to
each individual distress, for calculation of the weighted rating value of each
individual distress.
Step-3: The final rating value is calculated by taking the average of the weighted rating
values of all the distresses.
Table B1: Individual distress rating value for rural roads PCI calculation (IRC:82 – 2015)
Defects Range of Distress
Cracking (%) >20 10-20 <10
Ravelling (%) >20 10-20 <10

In case of rural roads, periodic renewal treatments may be decided when condition rating reaches
to a value of 2 to 1.
