Traffic Volume Study 1st Part

This report summarizes the results of a traffic volume study conducted at a priority junction in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The study analyzed traffic volumes, directional distributions, flow fluctuations, and vehicle compositions. Key findings include that cars, jeeps, microbuses, and ambulances represented the highest traffic volumes. The results provide insights into current traffic patterns that can help control traffic and recommend improvements like road widening or increasing public transportation. The analysis was conducted through primary traffic surveys to better understand the present status of traffic flow at the junction.

ABSTRACT

The three main parameters of a traffic flow are volume, speed and density. In the
absence of effective planning and traffic management of the Dhaka city, Bangladesh,
the current road infrastructure cannot cater the future needs of the city. The
current work studies traffic characteristics in Dhaka city at one selected priority
junction. In this work, emphasis was given on traffic volume and the analysis was
carried out through primary traffic flow surveys at Pubali bank ltd. junction to
Satrasta Junction in Dhaka city. Traffic flow is studied by direct methods. For better
understanding of the present status of traffic flow at the junction, traffic survey is
conducted. Calculation of Passenger Car Units (PCU’s) for different vehicle types was
provided by our respected course co-coordinators of the course CE 452.

With the help of the data collection, an attempt had been made to understand the
traffic patterns during different time periods. Cars, Jeep-Micro-Ambulance, and
NMV are highest in volume at our junction.

The results from the present study are helpful in controlling the traffic at the
intersection and also in suggesting some of the remedial measures to improve the
traffic safety in the region. Remedial measures such as widening the road, changing
4-lane to 6-lane or by providing more public transportation can be recommended
based on the outcomes of the work.
